Hi @sabrina, it looks like there is quite a lot going on. I am not a canine clinical behaviourist, and in all honesty, that is what you need. In the first instance, however, Sophie does need to see a vet. It sounds like the skin problem is causing a lot of discomfort, and may in some way be contributing to her behavioural issues.

Hi, so sorry to read Sophie has all this problems. Just wanted to mantion the possible colleration with the medical problems. I’ ve noticed you have seen the thred I’ve wrote about hypothyroism so take a look at the Linked webpage with listed symptoms.

Sabrina - I would urge you please to investigate hypothyroidism as well. Your description of sudden behavioural change and also the loss of hair, is classic for hypothyroidism. The test will involve blood tests, so it's pretty easy and relatively inexpensive. If she is hypothyroid, she would just need some thyroid medication for life to restore the levels to normal.

The important thing to say is that most vets do NOT RUN THE RIGHT BLOOD TESTS for hypothyroidism. Have a read of these links from Dr Jean Dodds, once of the world's specialists on thyroid disorders in dogs: https://drjeandoddspethealthresource.tumblr.com/dodds-thyroid#.W-L5F6d0fMI

Jean Dodds also has a book out on the subject (for the lay person or non-specialist:( http://amzn.eu/d/5IkQzb3 I would strongly recommend that book.

It is a bit complicated to explain which tests are needed, I've read all the material and the book and still my head feels like it might explode - but I know enough to be extremely sceptical if a vet says they are running the right tests and to find out exactly what they ran and compare that with Jean Dodd's recommendations. You could even print out the relevant stuff from her site and take it to your vet to ask them to run those specific tests or to send the bloods to Jean Dodd's lab.

Finally, Jean Dodds does recommend a 'trial' of hypothyroid meds if anything seems borderline or inconclusive or perhaps if clinically the dog seems hypothyroid even if the test results come back ok. If the meds help, then you can be sure the dog was hypothyroid, whatever the blood results are.

    If it's not hypothyroidism...

Frequently pit bulls are not very tolerant of other dogs, particularly as they enter sexual maturity and young adulthood. And particularly when they are the same sex and not opposite sexes. Of course there are some which get along great with other dogs - but there are a disproportionate amount which don't. If you can't find any medical reason or cause for the behaviour, the prognosis with dogs fighting within the household is not great unless you keep them separated all the time...

Thank u so much for this information. I have been reading up on this issue & I’ve seen what u were talking about with the specific tests. I will take that info to her vet with me & I guess see how they respond & go from there. I really hope that if it is that the meds will bring my Sophie back. Starr, our Pit, hasn’t been at all the aggressor in any of this. Sophie always has been. I’ve been sure to educate myself very well when it comes to Starr before we adopted her because I know how society scrutinized them. She’s done all she can each & every time to try to NOT fight with Sophie. And the only times she has is when she’s been forced to fight or flight. And even then, she only lashes out long enough to be able to get away from her. I won’t keep them separate for the rest of their lives because that’s just too sad to see them missing each other now & it’s heart breaking for us. So, I’m hoping she does have some issue that can be fixed with meds because if not we won’t be left with much other choice. Thank u again so much for the information. I’ll update here as things happen
