I have a 12 week old lab puppy named Remy. Sometimes when we are on walks, he will jump up on me and bite my clothes. Sometimes it gets so bad he puts holes in my clothes or breaks skin. I’ve read a couple other posts and it seems like he might be over - excited? I’m just trying to figure out what is triggering this and what are yalls best tips for handling this? He is usually a pretty good puppy and listens pretty well. I just do not know how to handle this properly. Any advice is appreciated!
It's not a good idea to take a 12 week old pup out on actual 'walks'. Instead, I would be using either a 2.5m house-line or a 10m long-line to allow the pup to get some distance from you so they can experience the world and learn more about it. You will then find the pup naturally investigates things, sniffs them, and is focussed on the world - instead of on you. This is as it should be, during the socialisation period. If the pup wants to stop and sniff something, they should be able to. If they want to charge ahead at 200 miles an hour - and then back again, they should be able to... Here's a video I made for students in my classes - I've set it to start at the right place: One major cause of this, is just frustration - he wants to investigate his environment more, and he can't because he is connected to you by a short leash. Give him more leash to learn about the world and he will be less frustrated....
