Hi all, Last night we gave our 18 week old puppy Huxley a large size beef bone (bought from the vets and approved by the vet nurse), and three of his teeth fell out! He didnt seem at all bothered or in any pain, we in fact found him quite happily chewing on one of them, he seems normal today and has eaten all his meals as normal. I just wonder if this is meant to happen quite like that? I know they lose their teeth, but it seemed sudden, and it is three back teeth and there dont seem to be any growing in their place that we can make out? Any advice appreciated
Sorry, not sure about back teeth because I can't remember which ones they lose but Ella lost about four front teeth in one day and there were just red dots in place for a couple of days before the new teeth came through.
Although I didn't give Juno bones to chew on at 18 weeks I do remember going round the lounge and kitchen and picking up teeth and finding her merrily chewing the odd tooth in her mouth and spitting it our for me. Teething seems to be one of those things that they all do differently - some lose the teeth quickly and some stretch it out over weeks, personally I think I prefer the quick loss . Try not too worry you'll soon see a new set of white teeth appearing, but if you're worried why not give the vets a ring for a quick chat
I never found any of Dexter's teeth, not one, ( he probably ate them!) he did have red dots like Emily has mentioned and when he did, teeth came through really quickly after a couple of days . Just a note of caution (even though I Know you've bought that bone very responsibly ) take care with hard chew items.....if you have a really determined chewer they can damage their teeth ......we've discussed on here before about the "Thumb Nail Test' ...ie if you can't make an indent in the chew with your thumb nail it is too hard,I took antler chews straight back to Pets At Home after reading that as Dexter will crunch down far too hard if he gets going.I am of letting him have the nylabone chews( they definitely don't obey the thumb nail test) though but I sit and hold them as he chews and as soon as he starts going too strong,I whip it off him! Ice cubes and frozen flannels/ tea towels are great for teething times x
