Hi All My gorgeous boy has just turned 1yo, and generally pretty good, but I would like some advice in a couple of areas, please? We are working on his recall, but until it is solid we lead walk him at all times unless in enclosed field or there is literally no-one else around! Otherwise he would be off like a missile and his brakes are faulty.... When on lead, if he sees a dog (or person) he wants to talk to he will do one of two things - he will either pull me off my feet to get to them, or will pancake flat on the floor until they pass him or go out of sight - no amount of treats or verbal instruction can get him to move! He is over 30kg. can anyone help? Many Thanks Cas xx
That picture! What a dreamboat We are working through these issues and one thing we’ve found to help is a technique called many things but we know it as ‘Look At That’ - practice at home and start with the lowest distraction possible and build up to harder things so they know what ‘look at that’ means before you go for it with another dog present. Go for really high value treats, and when they look at the distracting thing you Mark it with ‘Look At That’ and give a treat every time they look at it. I believe the theory is about the association becomes that they give their focus to you (eventually) when they see a distraction because they are expecting a treat, instead of focusing on the distracting thing. If you search the forums for LAT some very experienced owners have explained it significantly better than myself. Training Middle might be another suggestion to condition your dog to have something to do when they see another dog instead of instantly drag you there. Then you can work on ‘Go Say Hello’ so they know when it is and isn’t OK to meet another four legged friend. Good luck Jess
