Just taken Charlie to the other paddock that I use, the one with the dreaded stile, well today Charlie was a naughty boy and flew under said stile and ignored my verbal commands and legged it across the field and was gone for about 5 minutes, there are many dogs around in the evening. My son ran after him as he is a lot quicker than me, called him and got him back, he then saw 2 people with dogs and went to greet them (I had the lead), then he saw me I called him and he came back to me to a large number of cheese pieces and praise. Feel a little deflated as worried he has got a taste for "running free" again. I can't risk taking him in there again and the paddock I have been using has horses it in now, so nowhere to take him for running off steam only our garden :( Helen x

They do know how to lull you into a false sense of security. Hope it's just a one-off, but I'm sure he'll continue to settle down as he gets older. Never give in!

Dont lose faith in him Helen , they all have these set backs but at least he did come back to you which is good :) I remember about six months ago , I relaxed, thinking I`d got it cracked , served me right because the following day, Sam was a demon in the field , ran off to the other dogs when he knew it was time to go, but like Charlie , he did come back, in his own time , still got fuss and a treat . Just think back to the disappearing dog that he used to be xx

Kate is right - and the old song - "you've got to accentuate the positive..."

yup, I've had setbacks with both of mine, then they suddenly 'remember' how they are supposed to behave again...I'm just impressed he came back! And he'll remember the amazing treats and praise he got for coming back...

OK ladies am keeping the faith, I am sure it was a one off  Much better than the 1 hour disappearing acts when we first got him and he can only improve ;). Thank you, Helen xx

I bet he knew exactly where you were all the time.
Lilly does the same (still ::) ) but now often when we call whilst she off trailing deer scent, she pauses, clocks where we are and carries on her hunt. Blatant ignoring.
Look at it as 10 steps forward and only 2 back.
You are still a star, doing SO well.
