After last Fridays small crash I repaired the bike and have made a modification. I added a bungy cord to the end of the retractable lead and the other end to the front of the bike. This way if he again threw down his anchor I have a bit of a chance to react! Also paid better attention to keeping him a bike length ahead so I could better anticipate any diversions! He got the exercise he needs and it was fun.
Re: 2nd attempt at cycling with Luka a success! Be careful!!!! When I lived in town, I used to rollerblade with two dogs on leashes. Things usually went fine (both knew the drill and loved the running), until once, one of the dogs HAD to stop when I wasn't paying close attention. I crashed, skinned knees and elbows, but worse, dislocated my right shoulder. There I was, 7 AM on a Sunday morning in a huge deserted park, two loose dogs, injured myself, no cell phones at that time (I'm aging myself )... Could barely walk, certainly couldn't drive. One cyclist just whizzed past me, ignoring my call for help, but 20 minutes later a park attendant showed up in her truck so I was saved. ;D Took a bit of maneuvering to get the dogs back in my car (getting to the keys in my right front pocket was a challenge - I was moving very carefully by then!). I ended up in the emergency room and an uncle and cousin rescued the car with the dogs. I don't think I rollerbladed quite that way again!
Re: 2nd attempt at cycling with Luka a success! Hey Laura I'd love to see a photo of that! I can't IMAGINE the chaos Pongo would cause if I went out with him on my bike. He believes that any sort of wheel (and I do mean ANY sort of wheel) has been put on this earth so that he can chase and bite it. The game seems to be to try to bite the bit of the wheel that is just in contact with the ground at the front. The faster it is moving the better. He wanted to try this with the combine harvester when the farmer was taking his crops in a week or so ago. You won't be surprised that we kept him in the house that day... Rosie
Re: 2nd attempt at cycling with Luka a success! Glad your bike ride was a success this time Laura but please be careful x Nancy that sounds absolutely awful and pretty frightening for you having your dogs running free and being unable to do anything. Before cellphones hmm I too remember those days x
Re: 2nd attempt at cycling with Luka a success! Helen, it was frightening especially since I was in no shape to chase down the dogs, if they'd been inclined to misbehave. It was so gratifying to see them respond to my call and whistle, and watch them jump into the back of the Subaru! I'm just glad it was parked in the shade, since it was at least an hour before my uncle and cousin got there (they came to the hospital to check on me first, and I had to shoo them away to go get the dogs...). That was the second of three dislocations of the same shoulder (horses involved in the other two), so now I have several screws in it! Actually, both shoulders have to be "rebuilt" due to injuries suffered by combining dogs, horses, rollerblading, jumping, and snow tubing. Most of that was in my crazier youth. Now I'm older and wiser.

Re: 2nd attempt at cycling with Luka a success! Just reread my second post and saw that I referred to "..have to have both ...". Shoulda said "had to have both" since both those surgeries are long since in the past, and not something I have to look forward to!
