Hi, Monty is 18 months old and is lovely, very active, walked twice a day (one walk at least 1 hour in woods/fields). However, he has started to put on weight. he is fed James Wellbeloved twice a day recommended amount and has a small gravy bone after each walk and occasional treat, which we have now stopped. I am thinking will have to cut back on his JW food? Or possibly change for something else? He was neutered at about 10 months.
No just cut the amount you give him. They always over estimate on the package what a dog needs. They want to sell you more and it's only average estimation any way. I usually cut by a third for weight loss.
Hi @liz sharman welcome to the site. Here are some suggestions I. If not currently in operation, I recommend low-kilojoule diet, reducing the level of energy the dog is receiving per day--reduce the intake of kilojoules. That is less food, or one with less energy. II. Determine whether the dog is getting titbits between mealtimes, (fallen or low-hanging fruit/a well-meaning neighbour). Since it is the sum total of kilojoules that is the problem, then the titbits should be eliminated. Pick up the fruit or talk to the neighbour. III. Teach the dog to retrieve, which is one game that requires a relatively large amount of energy, compared to social walks. Dog walks don't use up very much energy. Dogs evolved to hunt for prey by walking very long distances and then a chase down of the game. In the wild would go for sometime without any food at all--the hunt was not fruitful...
Hi and welcome, our pup is on JW and she was on the recommended amount and was losing her "waist". We gradually cut down the amount at each feed and she soon returned to a healthy look. Also beware treats
