My 4 month old black lab puppy has been very lazy, sleepy, and generally less active the past two days. It has been about 95 degrees outside so I think it might be weather related (or maybe he's just growing). However, we have only taken him outside for 15 minutes in the early morning and late evening to play and for potty breaks. Any ideas as to why he might be acting this way?
I think I remember my boy Pongo being like this in his first summer. Probably just a combination of warmth and growing up... is he happy in other ways? Is he eating and drinking well? Is his poo normal? And welcome to the forum!
Thank you so much! He is eating and drinking well and his poo looks normal. It is just a change in his activity level that I've noticed.
Our 3 month old likes a lounge/ sleep when it's hot outside, normally around 6pm when it gets a bit cooler madness is resumed!.
Our 9 month old pup is definitely more lethargic in the heat; he pants, gets a bit restless and then when he finds a cool spot he'll sleep. I'm hoping he'll adjust as he matures but in the meantime I put icecubes in his water and keep him in the shade whenever we go out. On the other hand, if it seems out of character and he doesn't perk up when it's cooler in the evenings/early mornings, maybe call your vet and ask their advice? We're still learning their characters at this age, so I keep reminding myself that it's fine to seek reassurance from a professional
I worried about this as Maisy is very lethargic in heat, worse I think when it is humid. She is 15 months and I cannot remember her being as bad last summer when she would have been 4 months, but I think it is the humidity that is worse this year. She will happily trot around on a walk and sniff but is not bothered about running after a ball, in the day she moves from one spot to the other to lay down and keep cool. I have been asking all the other dog walkers I meet and I'd say 95% of their dogs (of all ages) are the same, so I am not worried. In all other aspects she is fine. I make sure she has access to shade and water all the time, give ice cubes and frozen treats/kongs, I had one of those cooling mats (which are brilliant and really work) but her claws made a hole in it.
We had the same, it lasted two minutes before one of Kipper's nails made a hole so the mat was sent back for a (suprisingly easy) refund.
Yes I got a refund with no hassle, must be common, in which case why don't they make it stronger and fit for purpose? (I would like one for myself actually)
A lot of stuff in our house is duct taped to fix the holes. It tends to be husband's answer to everything
He hasn't much but the heat index has still been in the high 80s and 90s until about 9pm the past couple of days.
It’s our answer to everything, too! Snowie ripped his bed (waterproof inner) from digging a nest. My husband would duct tape it up each time. When the inner was more duct tape than actual inner material, it was obvious it was time for a new bed!
Oh! For a minute Oh! but it's suitcases and everything here! Last time we went abroad his suitcase was instantly visible on the carousel, not because of a smart looking thingy with his initials on, but because it was the only one held together with duct tape.He's a Yorkshire man, not a lot I can do really. He's lovely with little Joy though.... and me... I suppose there are worse things than a spot of duct tape!
Ah...this is me in our house. Especially the WD40. The door squeaks. The door squeaks. The door squeaks. Me: "are you going to fix that?" OH: "what with?" Me: "WD". OH: You can't use that - it'll drive out the grease". The door squeaks. The door squeaks. The door squeaks. I sneak the WD-40 and squirt the hinge. The door is silent............bliss. No more is said. OH is fanatical about electrics & electrical safety. He once opened a socket in my old house, where I'd previously "fixed" it - I'd bundled the wires together and bound them with sellotape!
in the heat my puppy stays in our kitchen. it's aboit 10 degrees cooler. He sleeps and mooes all day and comes alive at about 8pm. we also thoight a cooli g pad was the answer but he didnt gave the patience to lie on it for 10 minutes until it got cold. Just carried it around in his mouth until it burst. I think it lasted 2 hours!
