Good morning all! Thank you for all your ideas and comments. Taking everyone's ideas on board, I've decided to experiment with getting up in the night to see what happens.

We put Maisie out for her last wee at 11pm, and then I got up at 3am, heard a bit of a fussing at 5am, she then slept til 6am. I'll stick with it and see what happens. Maisie was a lot less frenzied at 6am, which was a much nicer start to the day! Onwards and upwards ;)

    She's gorgeous!

I got up at 3am for the first week - after that when I came down to her at 3am she didn't want to wake up or move! So then I gave that up and started getting up early, moving it forward by 15 mins a day 'till we got to 7am. I never fed her before 7am, so we just snoozed on the sofa together 'till then in the early days.

    Lovely puppy snuggles :)

I think I was lucky with Scout, I like my early nights but in the first few weeks I would stay up till 10.00pm let her out, put her to bed and she would stay there till 6.00am, she would be bursting bless her so straight out and then back in for all the good morning excitement and hellos. Now she takes herself off to bed at 10.00 even on the rear occasion me or someone else is still up and to try and wake her up to go out after she has gone to bed is near impossible but very funny to see her grumpy face lol
Now she sleeps till 8.00, it's like we have matched our sleeping patterns ;D

Hello Debs, I know just how you feel. I also have a 9 week old male lab....and I've been at my wits end for a while BUT a very kind lady took pity of me last night and told me to do this: get him to bed by 9 pm after going out for the bathroom. Should sleep for about 6 hours which means 3 am. Wake puppy, take outside for a wee....no talking/no playing/no noise....after the wee or poop or both, put puppy back into crate and you go off to bed. Puppy should sleep for another 4 hours without a problem or even more.
I did this LAST NIGHT....bed at 9....up at 3...back into crate....up at 6:30. But also remember YOU have to go to bed at 9 so you get a good sleep! Give it a try....it worked for me....at least for last night. This kind lady said that putting him to bed at 11 pm was way too late for a puppy. Let me know how you make out and GOOD LUCK!

Thanks Yvonne, bit of a shock to the system isn't it?!!

Maisie has been sleeping from about 9pm and we have been taking her out for a wee at about 12 for the last few nights, as OH has been home and he'stayed up later! I've then got up at 3am and taken her out, straight back to bed and she wakes at 5am! Tried 4am last night, as she didn't want to leave her crate last night at 3am, and she didn't wake til 5.15am, so no improvement there.

So, I might try not taking her out at midnight and then do the 3am and see what happens as you suggested ;D!! We can compare notes tomorrow! Now I know why we have babies when we are younger!! ::)

Hope you have a good night.

Hi all. I'm so glad I read this thread! It seems I've been along the right lines with Jasper but I wonder if I can be moving things along a little quicker?

We got him at 10 weeks and he's never soiled his crate since the journey home. I'd much rather break my sleep than wake to a dirty crate so I've been doing 2300 bed 0300 toilet and 0600 wake up but only pushing back the loo break by a few minutes each night. What level of capacity should he have now? Ie if he's capable of holding longer can I push back the loo break by say half an hour every few days until its phased out?

Hi Jaspersdad, how old is he now? I would probably start pushing back the times by 15 mins every couple of nights and see how you get on :)

    Hi Naya,
We've only had him a week and a half so he's coming up for 12 weeks. His first night he lasted from around 0000 to 0600 but I thought that was just luck so got up from the second night onward.
15 minute increments sound good and everycouple of days works out to around a month, so does 7 hours through the night at 4 months sound about right?

That's what Harley was doing, but I know each dog is different. At 9 months Harley will now sleep from 10.30pm-7.30am and we have to force her out of bed! Weekends she will often sleep 11/11.30pm-10am ;)

    Re: 5am alarm clock

So, two and a half weeks after posting about my 5am starts I am no further forward! I have tried everything! It doesn't matter what time she goes to bed, if I get her up in the night, she still wakes at 5am! And, she is fully awake and ready to rock and roll!! Looks like I am going to resign myself to being an early mornning girl and going to be at 9pm

Morning Debs, my old fragile cat also gets me up early - good training for the pup.
I should have read this thread again but haven't, had someone mentioned making the crate dark and completely covering it? It occurred to me that the early dawns will just naturally wake any animal.
    Have a good day!

Ah, your pussy cat is definitely good training for the pup ;) I have covered her crate with a heavy blanket, but it makes little difference....I think you are right, early morning light = awake puppy! Hey ho, I'm getting used to it now! How long until your pup arrives home?

Debs, you have given me another opportunity to talk about her! I am going to choose her/her choose me next Thursday, then she'll be ready for home around the 21st of June I think. She'll only be about 4 weeks and 4/5 days when I see her. Slightly early but I wanted to avoid the busy puppy choosing days so I didn't feel rushed. I get to choose from 3 chocolate girls. I spend ages looking at the photos I am sent! ::)
