Our female lab is now eight & a half months and only occasionally goes through the night. She's fully house trained so no issues other than she'll rattle the crate door at night anytime between 2.00 and 5.00am generally and need to go out in the garden (we always take her on the lead) for a poo. Wee's are not an issue - if she goes out between 10.00 and 10.30m she won't need another one until 8.00am the next day. Do we need to adjust her routine around walking times and feeding times? She has breakfast at 7.00ish and has been having tea at 5.00pm though I've just moved this to 6.00pm today to see if it helps.
I guess my question is whether she's formed a habit of whining and rattling the crate and down we come to take her out, or if she's still too young to go through without needing a poo?

Hi there, personally I think I'd try a couple of nights of taking her out at 10pm for a last wee, then ignoring the crate rattling for a night or two... I think by 8 months most pups can hold on through the night for a poo and suspect she has just got into the habit... :)

I know they are all different but I agree with Karen.

I don't know if anyone else agrees with me, but I think that just as with children (and older ladies, ahem......) the more you go empty your bladder, the less chance it has to have a chance of increasing its capacity, so gradually extending the time between pit stops will help this. And also NOT restricting fluids too much.
Not sure this applies to Woof, if you take her always out on the lead for pee/poo trips, but I wonder if "summer puppies" where the door is more often always open, are a bit slower to be dry overnight because they are more frequent toileters.
This is just a bit of a theory based on humanoid activities! ;D and probably of no earthly use.
Back on my laptop so easier to type screeds ;D ;D
