All of a sudden my 9 month lab doesn't seem interested in eating his dog food. I put food down and he eats very little and walks away. I will continue to get him to eat and he will playfully squat down and wag his tail. He is still a happy, bouncing, playful lab. His stools look good, so I don't feel it's a health issue. He still wants his treats and this morning I gave him some of our dachshund's food and he did eat, but since not puppy food do not want to switch to that. Has anyone else had this problem with their lab all of a sudden not interested in their food? I am wondering if it's his food, he is fed Blue Buffalo large breed puppy food. Needing suggestions!
Could his food have gone mouldy? I had this happen some years ago with Hattie's food. I couldn't understand why she all of a sudden stopped eating, she was well, exercising etc. so I emptied the bag out and it was mouldy in the bottom. Got a new bag and she ate it. Just a thought.
Hi Gus' mom. Our Harley is now about 7 months old and while she was teething she started showing disinterest in her food. She has been on the same food since we have brought her home. We then started wetting it with water to soften it and she would eat. Now, her teeth are all grown out and no issues but she still prefers her food wet. She will eat it dry but (in South Africa we have a saying that goes "lang tand", it means long toothed) with obvious dismay and I have realised that nothing, I repeat, nothing can make me feel more guilty than a look from Harley and she has the same superpower over DH. So that is all I can recommend. I hope it is as simple and that Gus starts having his food with enthusiasm.
I had the same problem with Cooper......dont know if kibble was moldy but I was pouring the dog food into a large plastic bin. In reading instructions on the actual dog food bag it said "do not put into plastic"!!! So I threw out what was in the bin and bought another bag and problem resolved. I also feed Cooper Blue Buffalo Wilderness but I do NOT give him anything with chicken.....I do Duck, Beef or Salmon.....he looooves all three of them.
Some dogs are free feeders. My Malamute would only eat as much as he wanted, and would go back to it when he wanted. Tilly could do that also, until we got Cooper. Cooper (aka Hoover) will eat all of Tilly's food if she doesn't, so she scarfs hers down right a way now. Most Labs are not free feeders, but some are. We also use Blue Buffalo large beed, chicken and rice. We used to do the Salmon, but we think Tilly might have a mild allergy too it.
Thank you! I would have never thought of that. I do buy the big bags of food. I didn't see any mold, but I always use a plastic bin to store his food next to his bowl and does smell strong. I'm going to throw out and try something else and will see what happens. Thank yo
I do use a plastic bin for storage and when I smelled it, it does seem a little strong! Wondering if that is the problem. I'm getting wonderful feedback, so now for making changes to see if helps. Thank you
I now put the entire bag into the bin and scoop from the bag. Give it a try with a new bag of dog food and see if that was the problem.
Seems I have a similar issue and this may be the reason. Whenever we get close to the end of the bag - we do use a plastic bin and the kibble directly in it, he would turn his nose away. I have a new bag sitting here, so once the other one is gone, I will try to squeeze the bag inside the plastic bin of course after washing it. Warm water helps. I also put a little drizzle of peanut butter around the bowl.
Also, just have a little look in your dogs mouth, check gums, teeth and have a sniff too. Just in case there is a erupting tooth that's sore, cracked or something is bothering him in his mouth, throat.
We had this too. Will definitely stop pouring into a plastic container to see what difference it makes. I often add a few cooked veggies now and it's wolfed down!
