Hi all, My little Miyao (female lab 4 months tomorrow) is currently at 9 kg. I was wondering because on average she should be around 15 kgs AFAIK. Will she reach her full size potential as she just survived Parvovirus? 3 weeks ago and at 3 months and 1 week she dropped to 6.5 kgs (8 kg at 3 months) during her parvo days. She slowly recovered as per the vet she is a miracle pup because she was almost dead when she was confined. I dont want her to have stunted growth. The only good thing she has now is her energy levels, athleticism and her big big big appetite.
I edited your post which said your pup was 4 weeks tomorrow - I was at first It's hard to say whether her illness will have any long-term effects on her size. I know you say you don't want her to have stunted growth, but the main thing is that she is healthy and happy, whatever size she is. My boy was very small as a young puppy (not as small as Miyao, but smaller than average) and he grew to a normal size adult. So she may grow normally in the end.
If she is healthy I wouldn't worry. She will grow to whatever size and weight - my girl was only around 8kg at 16 weeks without Parvo and grew to 'standard'. I've known several Parvo survivors and have worked with them and they have all been within their breed standards, nature and genetics seem to overcome the poor start to life with good nutrition. The problem I've found with Parvo survivors is that they are unruly - the reason I get to meet them - as their owners are so happy and relieved at their survival that they don't train good manners
Parvo is a horrible, horrible disease. So pleased that your pup survived Parvo does have a variety of effects, depending on the severity of the disease, and the treatment. You pup was treated early and by the sounds of it was probably in doggy intensive care for a while. Now, whilst Parvo does have some long-term effects, one of them being on bone marrow, it does sound like the you caught the problem early therefore avoiding any of the complications associated with this disease. Your vet however, really is the best person to advise you on whether this will affect her predicted adult weight. Saying that 9kg @15 weeks isn't that dissimilar to a lot of pups on the forum, and I would imagine she still has a little bit of catching up to do yet after her poorly few weeks. I am sure she will be fine, sounds like you have a wee fighter there!
Harley was 9 weeks old when we brought her home and only weighed 3.3kgs. She is still not a big lab but she was at the vet last week for her kennel cough vaccination and now weighs 32kgs at 11 months. The vet is happy with her, as long as she doesn't gain more. So she will still surprise you with her growth. I am so glad she is okay now. Good luck.
My Stanley was 1.9kg when he came home at 9 weeks. At 5 months he was 12kg. Teeny tiny! Now he's 17months and a normal healthy 26kg. I wouldn't worry too much
My puppy survived Parvo but she was 6 months old. She is also a miracle puppy, was at the Vet's for 5 days and on IV for 4 days. My Vet said a healthy white blood count in dogs is 16. 8 is darn sick and 2 is dead. Jet went down to 4. She was smaller than average and finished much smaller than either parent but at 56 lbs still met the standard and was healthy. My Vet said the disease had not affected her growth, she was just small. Or maybe it's red blood cell count. I can never get that part right. I was pretty sick about it myself at the time.
Sounds like your little girl is doing really well. I think weights vary so enormously, I wouldn't imagine she will be much different to a "normal" lab. Although maybe I should correct that to a healthy-weight lab, as so many labs are overweight Have you seen the thread with the graphs? https://thelabradorforum.com/threads/how-much-does-your-puppy-weigh.5888/ Although it looks like the later graphs have been eaten by PhotoBucket permission changes
As everyone else has said, as long as she's healthy that's what counts. She will grow as much as she grows. She may end up being a sweet little "travel sized" Lab or she may catch up with her normal growth by leaps and bounds and surprise you. My first dog nearly died of giardia at 9 weeks old and was small for his breed until about six months old. Then he caught up with a vengeance, eventually topping out at a very respectable 55 kg, which was completely normal for the breed standard.
My pup also survived parvo contracted at 6 mos. and was in intensive care for a week. I can't remember how much he weighted when younger, but he's grown into a lean 34 kg adult - a little bigger than his mother and a little smaller (mainly narrower shouldered) than his father. So about what one would expect from genetics. I don't think his growth was affected by the disease.
