This post should maybe have a Health Warning :'( Luckily I haven't had personal experience of this, thankfully, but I know a lot of the forum members have. I was bad enough when our old rabbit was PTS. I am part of a group on FB, lots of doggy people sharing and supporting, lots of talk "doggy style". This may not be to everyones taste, but it certainly made me cry. The poem is equally applicable to humans, I am not sure who the author is. I hope you don't mind me posting it here..... I would give it the title "A Moon Howl for Sammy" I dids wait till da sun lights hab fallen froms da bottoms ob da gardens befur I followed da paff down to where da fairies play... Da tail is lows and da ears are flats to da heads, but da pwayer book is tucked under da arm fur me to weads...... Sammy, I dids not knows you in da gwoup fur longs, but lets me say, you sures was a big character pal. You made ebery pawdys face lights up wiv da smile, and dats a goods fing fur a doggie to do. Your likkle hearts was poorly, and da day dids come where you dids knows dat it was time to weach up to da skies and open up your paws... I seed dat dere are bery speshal wings dat were mades fur you Sammy, dey dids takes a long times to be cwafted speshals... Dat clouds number 9 was beings pwepared fur days fur yous arrivals... Da wed carpet was wolled out.. Da heabens dids see dat you were weady to be wefweshed and made wells agains. Your family will be missings a bery big piece ob da hearts wight nows, but I knows afters your likkle west from da twavels to da bwidge, you wills sends dem a likkle white feaber to shown dem dat you is dere wiv dem.. I knows dat mummy Lawrence is dere cloud hoppings too. He be da big handsome chocolate Labrador.. I knows fur sures he wills looks after you till you finds your paws... Wipes da tear dat glistens on da nose and den wipes wiv da sleeve and sniffs......Sammy.... When we looks up at da moon tonight we wills see an extwa star in da sky, a paw shaped one,... A doggies life on dis earf is such a short times,....sniffs gains and drops da heads,....until we meets gains... God bwess you Sammy, we gonna miss you,..... Dwops da elbows to da floor and closes da eye peeps... Da tears wollings to makes da eyes heaby...den howwwwwwwwwwlssssss... Closes da pwayer book and takes da moments to fink ob da bootifuls life dat Sammy dids hab...... Amen.... They say memories are golden well maybe that is true. I never wanted memories, I only wanted you. A million times I needed you, a million times I cried. If love alone could have saved you you never would have died. In life I loved you dearly, In death I love you still. In my heart you hold a place no one could ever fill. If tears could build a stairway and heartache make a lane, I'd walk the path to heaven and bring you back again. Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same.
