Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh aaaaaaaaaaaaargh aaaaaaaaaaaaaargh! Ah that feels better. Beulah has had 2 bad jumping episodes today where she just wouldn't stop. Once with my 4 yr old so he is now very wary of her :( & tonight with me - we were playing in the garden but she just wouldn't stop even when I turned my back on her, said ow & tried getting her to sit so she would stop (well at least she has a new skill!) When I could get hold of her I picked her up & carried her into the kitchen & she is now sulking in there whilst I'm in the living room watching tv. On the plus side at puppy class this week I learnt how to clean her teeth & we've done it twice - there is a little good in everyday - just hang in there!

I agree Star78,if its possible containment in one area is a big help ,I know it's not always possible though ,it won't last forever but it's a challenge while it does.

Beulah has got herself right overexcited.......we've never had a huge jumping problem...but it was still there, trying and sometimes succeeding on visitors :-[ I had a one to one with a dog trainer last week for something else and she picked up on it and asked me to show her what we did.She said that , turning our backs ,c&t paws on the floor,or the timeout in his area we give him is not succeeding( 5 months we have had him) so to try her suggestion....Everyone is going to gasp now .........but she said to put our knee up to him when we saw a launch coming.....We did that for 2 days.....and no visitors got jumped on at all this weekend..... :-\ On the whole I disagreed with everything else she advised us but won't go into it all now ....lets just say when she told me to look up Cesar Milan,I showed her the door

Boo! I am a very upset mum of two boys and a mouthy 6 month old. LOL. Just had a horrid walk with Amy who went into crazy jumping up mode. Knew it was going to happen when she was running around so much but I let her get to excited. (all my fault not hers) . She did recall from two dogs after a little sniff, I just kept walking and called her past them.

As for managing with the kids, I have spent most off the last 4 months in the kitchen with the puppy! I think it's all about judgement with what mood the puppy is in. Kids always ask if she is in a "nice mood" or "biting mood". It is my squealing four old we had most trouble with as he would he shouting her name as she jumped so the puppy thought he was playing. She is much better now with them. It's about training the kids as well as the dog!

Reading this really helps us to know things are normal, ha ha. As posted elsewhere Chloe is seventeen weeks old now,,yellow lab, doing very well in some things, however, our last two labs over twentyeight years never ever stole or jumped at the work tops.
This one does, have to move everything further back so she cannot reach, but she will get bigger!!! ::) A firm NO does not work, she thinks this is a game, she has breakfast room and kitchen to herself overnight, so far not destroyed anything, but leave kitchen towel hanging where she can reach it, and although housetrained, a few newspapers, something to do in the morning before we get up, which fortunately has gone from six six thirty to seven thirty and sometimes quarter to eight, heaven. Paper sometimes shredded and tea towel always on the floor.

Any ideas on how to stop her thieving, if she could, she would!!!

    Best wishes Val

Val, is there somewhere in your house you could use as a safe 'time out' area? Not her crate, but a small room (bathroom, entry area, study). When she jumps up on the bench, say 'time out' and lead her gently and quietly (i.e. you stay quiet, even if she is not) by the collar to the time out room. Leave her there for 30 seconds (or till she is quiet if that takes longer than 30 seconds) then let her out without fuss.

I would also keep the tea towel out of reach ;)

    Hi Val

My boy "counter surfs" too - on my desk, in the kitchen, even the table (only the outside one though). He can only get his paws up, and not his nose, on most surfaces - yet. The reason he does it, I think, is that he was massively rewarded by papers, post-it notes, and a roll of sellotape :-\ from my desk, which is lower than the counters. I'm trying to make sure that he never gets another reward from the behaviour (and obviously discouraging it). I hope I get him out of it quickly. Of course, OH thinks it's quite funny, which doesn't help...

Crates are brilliant inventions. Wiping things with Tabasco sauce as long as they won't spoil is another tip that works. But definitely keeping a control on where they can get to and at is the best advice. I used to only take my puppy into the lounge on a very thin long leash so that I could get him away quickly from anything that he wasn't to get at. Lots of trips out to garden, every 20mins or so until the house training was cracked. Sounds a lot but means they are trained quickly, also using a word whatever you decide on for when they are to go to the toilet. I used business and said it every time he performed and can now get him to perform to command.
