Hello all, my 10 month old is acting funny. He's following me around curling up in ball beside me wherever I go. He's been quite mellow today and I just took him out for a pee in a blinding snowstorm and he curled up in a ball as soon as we went out. Normally he rushes to have fun or do his business. He's eating and drinking and I have seen him go today but he certainly isn't himself. He's not showing any signs of distress just acting funny. Could he be in a growth spurt or depressed, or maybe he's actually behaving like I want him to and now I'm worried. Lol. I'm just asking if anyone has experienced this cause there is massive storm about to hit and if something is seriously wrong it would be a very long dangerous trek to a vet. If I could find one. He has had a bit of training today and he hit the jackpot so he might just be sticking close in hopes of getting more.

Did he have an especially tiring day yesterday?

Lift his lips and look at his gums. Are they pink or very pale?

Check his heart rate. What is it per minute?

    Is he breathing normally?

If you think he's not right then I'd go with that instinct. Can you call a vet for advice? You mentioned that you are not sure where you'd find one....

Yes, I would follow your instinct too, as Rachael suggests. Is there any way to call a vet first, though? Heading out into a blizzard is no fun. Is the vet close by?

I get migraines when the barometric pressure goes up and sometimes when it goes down too. I always wondered if animals got them as well. If animals can sense earthquakes coming, wouldn't surprise me if they know something is up with a massive snow storm coming. Maybe not a headache, I sure hope they don't get those, but a sense of unease, a feeling of change coming and he hasn't experienced that before?

Could he have eaten something he shouldn't have? Does he have a temperature?

He's breathing fine, Gums are good. He seems fine in most ways. It was just odd for him to go outside and immediately curl up and lie down. His day yesterday was not tiring at all. You cant tire this dog out. Lol. but we've actually been less active the past few days. His temp seems fine as well.

As for eaten something. There's always that chance. Lol. I checked in around his abdomen and bowels, nothing bothered him. His supper went down just as fast and it always does. It's weird behaviour hard to describe, he's not acting sick. He's not hiding in strange corners when he lies down. He is curling up which is something he hardly ever does. His ears and tail are positioned in a way i don't ever see. He's not afraid and he's never in trouble from us.

Hmm....might be in a bit of discomfort or have a mild temperature or something.

If he's eating and drinking normally that's good.

How are his ears and tail positioned? Can you post a photo?

Calling a vet to chat about it is the best idea I think. They are always happy to do that in my experience.

Oh well, I'll keep my eye on him. Im not concearned to the point of medical intervention at this point. I'll trust my gut. I am a first responder, marine firefighter/officer with first aid training and used to be a pro ski patrol. I'm not a vet, but I'm sure I'll notice if something turns. I helped, unfortunately unsuccessfully, my sister race her 5 year old Lab to the vet for an upturned stomache so I know to watch for those symptoms as well. Thanks for the tips. I just thought someone might have experienced this weird behaviour before. He's not afraid of thunder or gunshots and absolutely loves the snow so I just found it weird when I took him out in fresh snow that he would try to nap.

Yeah, that is weird, I agree. Since he's extra sleepy with no obvious cause I'd say that something is up (but that it's not serious at this point).

Good that you have first aid training etc. You'll spot any changes.

Well, just went out again as he up and running around. Ate some snow then as he stopped to wee a stupid death defying mouse ran under his legs. Keep in mind there's 6 inches ( 15 cm ) of fresh snow down now, and he killed the mouse, ran off and when I called him to come he did, eating the mouse in full gallop as ran in the front door. So I'm thinking he's better now. His eyes have their twinkle back. Now he wants to go back outside again. I'm thinking eating a mouse won't harm him. Just cut back on him breakfast. Lol. Rascal

Sometimes Stanley just can't be bothered.

He has lazy days where he sleeps most of it away cuddled up on the couch and is happy to just chill.

Other days he's a Tasmanian devil.

I think they're sometimes just like us - they have off days.

    Glad he's feeling better :)

I think they do get days where they just feel tired. Harley certainly has lazy days and I quite enjoy having our snuggles. Sounds like he's back to himself.......fantastic recall!
