hello, I need some advice for managing a few things for my 18 month old lab. He has a doggy bed and does spend time on it but recently has decided to sleep in bed or on the couch. I am thinking of putting the play pen back up to keep him inside but he has not had that in over 6 months. Or I was thinking of trying to crate train him? He is not destructive. He is not a fan of his crate and hasn’t been in it since he was 6 months. Jumping - he doesn’t jump on me or my boy friend when we come in the house but when he goes for a walk or strangers come home he can’t stop jumping on them. He also just started to stop listening u less you have treats. What should I do? Any advice on any of the above . Thanks Arti
Hi @Arti Sharma 1. Have a house line on the dog when supervised. Use it to prevent the dog from jumping up onto the couch. Or cover the couch with boxes or chairs when you are not sitting there. Over time when the behaviour is not reinforced the behaviour will become extinct. Alternatively teach the dog a boundary.--an imaginary line in front of the couch or bed. If he stays on the far side he gets treats. If he crosses the line the treats stop. To help him work out where the line is, use traffic cones, coffee tables, to form a line 2. Teach your dog to sit stay or down stay when visitors arrive. If the dog is sitting he can't be jumping. 3. Take your dog to a positive reinforcement obedience class, and learn how to reinforce behaviour without showing (bribing) the dog.
