Our boy turned 7 month yesterday and it seemed he decided over sleeping in his crate is no longer for him. He has been sleeping in it at night since he was 8 weeks with no problem. At what age can you leave sleeping not crated. I have been working so hard with him and it seems the last few days, he just doesn't want to listen. I can't stay mad at him, because I know he is a still a pup, and he comes up and gives me kisses. I read a lot of people have their dog sleep in the bedroom, is there an age when you can let him sleep in bedroom with us. He is housebroken and for his 7 month has not been destructive since he was 3 month. I supervise him and when i can't he has a safe area to keep him out of trouble. Any ideas ?
All our dogs have had their beds downstairs in the living room. Once we are confident they will be ok un-crated, we leave the door open, there is another bed in the room they often use, so its their choice where they then choose to sleep. None has ever been asked upstairs and consequently have never tried to or seemed in the least interested in trying.
Pongo de-crated himself at about that age. His "crate" was the space under the stairs, for which we'd made a nice slatted door. Harley has slept upstairs with us since she was about 14/15 weeks old. She sometimes stays down on the sofa or goes into the spare room, but always ends up on our bed by the morning. We've never had any problems - she actually slept better since she came upstairs.
Thank you so much for all the responses. He finally settled down last night in his crate. Maybe we try let him sleep on his favorite spot on the couch tonight and see how he does. I puppy proofed the living room when we got him and we gave both pups more freedom in the house. Our Christmas tree is of interest and one ornament fell of the tree, but it was non breakable so all was good. So far ours are not allowed in bed, but then they follow me around he sneaks in the bed and lays in it lol.
Jake was around 8 or 9 months when he started sleeping out of his crate. I didn't give him free rein of the house so just got him a bed in my room and also had the crate door open so he could decide on the spot he wanted to sleep.
At about 1 years old Homer started to refuse to go to his crate at night but was fine to go back in in the morning till his dog walker came for him. We let him sleep in the kitchen then eventually took his crate down. Then at about 2 years old he started to refuse to sleep downstairs at night. After it became sparest that he started to get nervous just before bed time, (storage how they read subtleties in our human behaviour) we let him upstairs with us. After being pushed out of bed once too often he now has a bed on the floor next to ours. But he does wake me with his licking and stactching on his bed, along with hubbies snoring!
I had each of my puppies in the bedroom from the word go as it meant we didn't have disturbed nights. I moved them downstairs after a month or so but Molly seems to have wangled her way back up! I love cuddles on the bed while I read but then I send her to her own bed at the foot of mine.
Ella tends to sleep in the kitchen behind a baby gate. We have a single storey house so she's pretty close to our bedroom and next door to our son's room. Occasionally she'll sleep with us but usually I only let her if the OH is away for work as there's more room in the bed
I love the puppy cuddles... so from day one crated in the bedroom and I think with both mine I cracked within 2-4 weeks (as soon as they could make it through the night with no wee trips) and they were in bed with me. I honestly can't remember any accidents in the bed...though I admit to perhaps having a selective memory for some aspects of puppyhood.
Libby was about 4 months when we started letting her sleep with us - after she was potty trained. She sleeps at our feet. I don't even know she's there.
It did me,I was actually a bit horrified by it but I'm reborn now and miss the big lummox If he's not on the bed x
He is housebroken to the point that he will not go in the house. He will come and let you know or wait by the door. I am more concerned what he could get into while we asleep. If he would just sleep on his bed in our room. Just don't understand what brought this change on other then he turned 7 months. I keep to their routine because it worked well, even with our new baby. He gets along well with her and i make sure he gets plenty of attention including alone time with me and my husband. He is my big baby and nothing is going to change it we will get through this too.
Same here. Cats are bad enough (we have at least one on the bed, sometimes all three) so I can't imagine sharing with a big lump of dog! I honestly boot the cat off my legs at least once a night..I can just imagine myself trying and failing to boot off a heavy dog lol. I do love snuggling with her on the sofa, though, so I can definitely see why you'd want to share a bed with your dog
Our dogs have always slept in the bedroom, crated or not. When they were old enough to de-crate they slept on dog beds, or in the case of Cooper, mostly on our bed. Nothing improves a nights sleep like having an 85# 25" tall moose sleeping in bed with you .
Lol and this is why I'm starting to regret letting Axel sleep on our bed. He's way too big and takes up half the bed. Clearly we need to buy a king size bed so we all fit comfortably
