I am attempting to teach Arnie to do the agility weaves/slalom. At the moment I have some cones on the ground and I am trying to lure him through in the weaving pattern. He's so clumsy it's like watching a bull in a china shop. He steps on the cones and spins around and just doesn't seem to get it. I have the cones spaced at easy distances for him. I have run my trainers border collie through a course before and she got it. However she's done it before. I just don't know how to make him understand what I want from the weaves. Any help?
I still haven't got this with any consistency but gave up on the cones straight away ,they were too easy to knock over ,miss out ,or pick up and run away with .... I eventually bought some poles from Amazon, they weren't very expensive but before I did I used cane stakes pushed into my grass and then I googled! The 2x2 method came up a lot ,basically you break your run down into 2 sets of poles with a big angle between them and then gradually reduce the angle between the 2 sets of 2 until you have 4 poles in a straight line.......ill try and find a video for you that explains it better.. I also went to a basic agility course here....they just taught it by starting to lure your dog through......I st
Sorry iPad gone mad.... It's still our hardest piece of equipment,I'm no expert ,I still have to run along side Dex in a course or call him through if working on it as an isolated piece ,it's taken the most practice X Hope you are enjoying agility together though ? X
Here you go,this is pretty good explaining it .... They are using what looks like sturdy sticks, good luck x
Thanks that's really good. I'm gonna get some poles because I'm finding the same thing. He just steps on the cones
We used the 2x2 technique with Benson, and dropped luring quite early on as does slow the dog down, and my understanding is the dog needs to see the weave as a whole exercise and not following your hand. Poles are better than cones though!
