    I have a 2 year old Lab.
He is a very strong dog, and i'm having problems with him pulling on the
lead when I walk him around built up areas.
I am trying the stand still and walk the other way- 2 methods, with out much
    success.
I walk him on a single collar and lead.
any advice would be a help.

Hello, I'm not an experienced owner but I use a harness instead of a collar, it doesn't stop the pulling but it does mean the dog's neck isn't being strained when pulling.
I'm sure someone who is experienced will be along soon with some advice for you.

Hi, yes agree with above a harness is better for helping to teach them not to pull, especially those that attach to both the front and back. Not pulling is something we have to teach them.

There is a good article on the main site, the Labrador site, about teaching them not to pull. Sorry, I can't do links.
