Re: Alternative to rawhide? I wondered whether I maybe didn't put the treat in the ball properly, but I can't see any other way it could go (it came with the treat in it anyway).
Re: Alternative to rawhide? He must've got his jaw round the whole thing to be able to pop the treat out. Or as you say maybe it wasn't in right... Anyway, we don't bother with the treats anymore either - we just stuff
Re: Alternative to rawhide? Well, I tried again today, and he didn't get the treat out quite as quickly, but still pretty quick. Then crunch, and it was gone. So he got the ball back with a few sea biscuits in it, and he couldn't get those out at all! He did try for a long time though, but I felt I bit mean...I poked them out for him in the end. Mainly to stop him hurling the ball around my office... : https://www.flickr.com/photos/123706979@N04/17109595466/ On the upside, his new pizzles came today, and they last a bit longer than rawhide, so that's good. I reckon 15 minutes, which is better than nothing....
Re: Alternative to rawhide? We put the cube shaped and twist shaped Fish4Dogs treats in - if they squash the toy with their teeth the treats crumble up and they can get them out. Requires a bit more puzzling out than a Kong. 15 mins with the bully stick is good!!!!! Ours don't last that long....but are still the longest lasting chew we have found.
Re: Alternative to rawhide? I have the large ball - I don't think it's possible to squish it enough to break the treats inside, it's like a mini tyre, really. Maybe it's best with wet food frozen, or perhaps a different shape. I do like it though. Charlie does too - he loved throwing it into my desk... The bully stick was really quite hard. It went soft enough to chew quickly enough though.
Re: Alternative to rawhide? Ah, sure. The toys we have are small enough to get your mouth around (if you're a dog). We have a small ball and the fire hydrant. Also the hard treat dispensing thing that bobs around and sort of looks like a big raindrop. I think that bully sticks are very safe. They soften up and the dogs don't tend to bite off chunks. It only they were more pleasantly fragrant to the human nose...
Re: Alternative to rawhide? Well, today the groovy ball arrived. Charlie got the "everlasting" treat out in about a millisecond and crunched it up. But, this time, I'd stuffed the middle with seabiscuits and the grooves with kibble. The kibble stuffed grooves were a success, the kibble is stuck in as firmly as commuters in a rush hour tube, so that lasted 10 minutes at least. And the sea biscuits did crush up as he crunched the whole thing. So that was a big success. The downside is he has already split the top of it after just one go (see top, left hand photo)...but, it's definitely the best more complex safe treat ball I've tried. I stuffed another one to be left with his kongs tomorrow and left it in the middle of the kitchen table (so OH doesn't forget it). Cheeky monkey climbed up on a chair and nicked it! Traded for a sea wrap and more safely stored for tomorrow... treat ball 1_Fotor_Collage by julieandcharlie, on Flickr

Re: Alternative to rawhide? ;D ;D ;D They are definitely worth exploring as an alternative to kongs.... they are more "interesting" for sure. Just need an extreme version....
Re: Alternative to rawhide? So, let me get this straight. You had a tidy up to sort out all your dog paraphernalia and decided that there was far too much room left in the boxes, so you had to buy more stuff?
Re: Alternative to rawhide? Yeah....the "chew toy basket" now isn't big enough. That's a pain. Need a bigger basket....
Re: Alternative to rawhide? Wow - Charlie really can chew! I don't buy the inserts as they cost a fortune, but they came with one and it lasted days. I gave them to the dogs for 30 mins at a time! Now I put a biscuit or a dried sprat in and it takes them ages to get them out.

Re: Alternative to rawhide? JulieT - it doesn't matter if they can't crush the treats inside, they keep at it with their tongues 'till they are soft enough to get out
Mags, what size ball did you buy?
They are the large orange ones. I do love them as they are a quick way to settle the pooches, especially when we have visitors, I'm going to get a medium one for the new pup (covers Gypsy's ears) http://tinyurl.com/pvfs7pb
Re: Alternative to rawhide? I think Tatze and Gypsy must have medium ones? There is no way Charlie could reach to the bottom of the large one to lick a treat, and it does look much bigger than those....unless I ordered the extra large or something. The groovy ball was a success today. I left him for 3 hours, and there was still a single bit of kibble left in a groove and a single sea biscuit left inside, so I reckon he'd have played with it for a long time. No sign of the "ever lasting" chew though, that was long gone...
Re: Alternative to rawhide? They are different things made by the same people out of the same stuff Julie. Ours is a large - here is the link http://tinyurl.com/kxoxpx9
Re: Alternative to rawhide? I bought one of the Bento everlasting balls for Maisie in a hope of finding something that lasts more than 5 minutes after reading about it on this thread! I arrived this afternoon and an hour later Maisie is still licking away at the biscuit! ;D ;D ;D
