J found another snake the other day. Sadly, it had become tangled in some netting I had laid out in the garden, and perished. Sorry, little snake Or, rather, not so little. I was away at the time, but he saved the body for me - gee, thanks, J! It's about 1.5m long! I looked it up, and it appears to be a Montpellier snake, which is technically venomous, but, as its fangs are in the rear, it's very, very rare to be bitten (the wiki on it says that only a few cases of envenomation of humans are known, one being when some eejit put their finger in its mouth!), and the venom is also so mild as to be little more than an irritant, even in dogs. So, that's a relief.
Snakes and I have a deal, they go their way and I go mine. I am fine pretending that they aren't around lol
Poor snake. Garden netting is a bit lethal - a bird got caught in my strawberry plant netting once (also died). I felt terrible. I came up with a new system where the netting is much tighter, and weighed down along the whole length. I haven't had anymore injured animals or birds. It's a faff to get off though! I'm thinking of investing in some proper cages, when I get around to it.
I wouldn't want to run into a snake but poor thing Years ago the boys had a football goal in the garden and a hedgehog got badly caught in it. I cut him out and got him to the vet who saved him. I chucked the goal out.
The netting has now been disposed of. I don't need it (for now) anyway. It was more to keep the dogs off my seedlings - and it didn't manage to do that, either! The dogs have now been trained to stay the other side of the short fence (80% of the time) and now the only pests I have are the ants that are farming aphids! I had no idea they did that. I find ants fascinating. But I can't have them farming aphids on my cucumber plants.... grrr!
Agree that netting can be lethal. We had a big grass snake that sadly got caught in the netting over our pond and died. Since then we use no more netting...
Snakes are rare in my current home area, but I was brought up in rural Surrey, with plenty of Adders about. My Gran was bitten twice, and was never a well woman after the second one. Our dogs always raced about on the common, and never got bitten, but we often saw the cats tormenting snakes - stupid animals!
I'm from Surrey, too, and have seen a few there. We also have the odd one here in Andorra (I'm back in the mountains for a few days), but they're very timid, so normally get out of the way as soon as they hear us clomping around
