I used to have a black Lab called Molly who was very stoic - she rarely whined or barked.

Indy is almost 2 years old, and is... Indy is pretty much the complete opposite haha she whines or cries anytime she feels like she's not being suitably played with, fussed or loved! We never indulged this as a puppy - we waited until she stopped whining before we went in to see her, never gave in to her when she was whining for food or toys etc.

I come down in the morning to see her and I'll make a big fuss over her. All good. Then I'll go into the kitchen to make myself a cup of tea before I take her on a walk. Pretty much from the moment I walk into the kitchen to the first step out the door she will be sulking and crying waiting for me.

When I come home from work, she greets me at the door where I make a big fuss over her. I then go upstairs to get changed and she'll be pacing around downstairs crying, waiting for me.

Whenever I'm playing with her and I finish the game she will start whining. If my wife wakes before me, Indy will come upstairs and wait outside the bedroom door crying. She will sit by the back door and cry because she wants to play in the garden. She never gives me a moments peace! I've wondered whether she might be in some kind of pain as I've never known a Lab to cry so much. She's been to the vets though and they never picked up on anything. She just seems to be a total drama queen!

Does anyone else have a very dramatic/vocal Lab?

Lincoln is 7 months old half Lab .To this point he rarely barks at all. In
the car he's silent. Out in public he never barks at people or other dogs. Although he does whine a bit when he wants to visit people. He loves everyone.
Our Shih Tzu is totally opposite, she barks at everything and anything.

Hi my11 month old pup is the same, she cries and barks for all the same reasons as your lab does! She is very vocal and persistently cries or barks if we are not paying her all our attention. I've also noticed that if she hurts herself, even mildly, she yelps and howls for a few minutes and then is fine.

Our previous lab was completely different,to the point that she could be quite poorly and not make a sound. She would also wait patiently if she wanted it needed anything until we noticed.

Isn't it funny how different they all are. It was quite a surprise at first but we are getting used to get now

Ours is similar, but probably a bit less vocal. He whines when *I* am in the house and he can't see me (but not with my husband! Such a mummas boy!). He also whine when he gets bored or if you have been sedentary for too long.

He used to do this thing where he would make a noise as he fell asleep, almost sighing loudly. It was very funny. He doesn't do that as much anymore.

And he often yawns loudly, which is adorable if sometimes surprising.

My dog is the same. She yawns and everyone can hear it. Whimpers when family members come home. Always talking--a real chatter box.

My puppy is not much of a barker, but he does have his moments. It mostly happens when he is bored or feels he isn’t getting enough attention from us. He will sit in the middle of the room and look at us while we are on the couch and he will just let out a few whiny barks. It’s pretty cute, but sometimes a bit ridiculous because he gets ton of attention and mental stimulation lol we do our best to ignore the behavior but sometimes it is just plain funny and I have to let out a couple laughs.

I know. It's hard sometimes not to laugh. Their behaviour sometimes is just so outrageously obvious and .......... cute. What would we do if they could actually speak?

Yup, my husband and I will be looking at one another, trying to ignore the dog and not laugh and then he makes the most absurd noise and we just can't help ourselves...

Whine growl and a throaty purr when laying on the bed with the Manx cat. Manx have no tails and act like dogs. And they trill and vocalize and yowl. I wonder if the Zeke talks more cuz the cats do?

For a long time I and well meaning friends were worried about his growl. For him I realized it's just vocalizing. Pay attention to body language until you know a true growl from their talking.

Now I am trying to differentiate between the I want to go play ball whine with the I need to go potty whine. Sounds the same to me.

We're the exact same. Indy will be pacing around crying with her toy in her mouth any my wife and I just look at each other, roll our eyes and laugh. She's a total diva!!

Yes, it's so amazing to see their different quirks and personalities. Molly was so placid and laid back - the ultimate relaxation dog whereas Indy is so mischevious and cheeky!

Thanks for all your responses :) glad to hear we're not alone in this!

My rescued lab is the same! Lots of whining, throaty growling sounds and also sounds like Scooby-Doo. She is very vocal. Especially in the morning and at dinner time.
