I am wondering how to help Archie get over his habit of piddling a little when he meets people as we are out and about. I've always found dogs that do that sort of pitiful, so to see my boy doing it is bothering me! He's not had too much experience meeting new people. Could that be the reason? Any ideas of how to help him get over this? He's wagging his tail and happy as anything to be meeting people, but he's leaving a puddle behind after he does it! Thanks so much for any tips! It's called submissive urination (there's an article on the main site if you're interested). Long story short is that it's a common puppy thing and they usually grow out of it by 12 months. Xena (6 months) does this for her favourite people (my mum, everybody at the vet's, the lady up the street). Doesn't matter if she's empty, she'll do a little wee. I hope she does grow out of it, but for now I think it's sweet - how amazing to be so excited by the world.
They do grow out of it. Betsy still does this at six months! She is just SO excited. Just call them 'excitement wees' rather than submissive urination!
My niece's Springer, Bryn did it and my friend's Lab Zaba. So far none of mine have - new pup in two weeks then we'll see!
Charlie did it too! I particularly remember him leaving a trail of wee over my neighbour's pale brown very new looking deck shoes....
Ella used to do it too . I remember taking her into work to meet everyone. She left little wet patches everywhere
Yes Hattie used to pee on our Dog Trainers shoe every week as she was soooo excited to see him She grew out of it. x
Thanks so much for all the responses. I'm very hopeful that he will outgrow it now. We knew a family whose dog used to do it as an adult (granted it was a small, yappy little thing) and would roll onto his belly and continue to do it so that the urine was shooting through air as well as all over the floor! Needless to say, fear of that inspired my question here! D.
Poppy still does it at 18 months. But not as much . It happens when she is so excited she can't contain herself. When we have new people over i have a mop and bucket at the ready
