Hello all! It has been several months since I have given an update on my white lab pup, Tiger, who has now reached almost 1 year. We got him last year at 2 months towards the end of Dec of last year. Since then, Tiger knows drop it, shake hand, down, roll over and speak commands, however, he does not like to 'drop it' and WILL bite. He gets posessive over toys/things. He does behave well in public when with me but at the dog park, he jumps on people (even while walking if he knows the person/the person gives him attention). He has started a new thing where if we are walking and theres a dog he knows or most of the time if its a person giving him attention passing us, he will try to jump on me, try to tear my shirt, bite on the leash to get me to release him from the leash. This does not happen very often but is a new thing he is starting. I have tried to calm him down by making him sit and holding him very tightly so I know by his reaction that this is NOT aggression but just a lot of hyper activity. I am thinking of buying a compression pad that goes around him to wear him out and stop the jumping/hyperness. Yes there are times when he gets so hyper that he even tries to hump me! Is this normal? Are family labs crazy...and yes, he belongs to a family that spoils him and my training gets undermined a lot. Sometimes I feel he ignores my commands even. The thing is, I am the one that takes him to the dog park(socialize), gives him walks, takes him to petsmart (store), takes him to different places to get him used to different sounds, environments, people, etc. I do A LOT for him and so he tends to ignore the rest of the family more and comes to me a lot more. His recall isn't good though, I feel like he picks and chooses a lot. This can be frustrating.
Re: Are family labs crazy? (update)_ You could try 'look at me' if you see someone approaching and treat him the minute he looks at you. This could help distract him, but you need to do it before he reacts. I started training it at home and my hubby would try and distract her - it took a few days, but we now have a really good 'look at me' that I used on occasions outside. Could you talk to the people in the dog park and ask them to turn their back if he jumps up and ignore him until he sits? Sounds like you have done quite a bit of training
