Fascinating. Bess always does the head tilting when I talk to her but doesn't so much when my husband speaks!

Interesting article! I read / heard the vision explanation for that somewhere else very recently... If I post again at 3 a.m., you'll know it's because I have just remembered exactly what it was they said! Now to play the aural equivalent of 'where-were-you-when-you-last had it'... must have been something on Radio 4... ???

    Really interesting question...

I don't find his hypothesis plausible. We have a big head tilter here.... Does it to sound, not visual stuff, and not just to human faces either. Plus, when Obi looks at me he clearly has a direct view and head tilting doesn't get his nose out of the way at all. A better designed study would involve using dogs with the same shaped heads/muzzles and blocking vision to varying degrees on one group. You'd use a visual only cue half the time and an auditory only cue the other half of the time (controlling for order or presentation).

    Anyway, still a great question!

An interesting read but I personally still think dogs do it to focus on a noise

Not sure about that theory. Our last dog almost never tilted his head, he had a large muzzle. Current lab tilts all the time and seems to be when he wants clarification on something. I thought it was hearing related. I would like to know more about smiling (full baring teeth) and why they do that too.

    Isn't the smiling....apprehension?/ fear?
I remember Pippa posting something about a Facebook post that went viral and explaining that it wasn't funny because the dog was actually quite nervous of its owner....
Dexter does the classic ear scratch as well when I'm trying to get him to do so something and he doesn't understand what I want ...it's really helpful because I know then I'm not being clear in what I'm trying to do x

Obi does exactly the same, Angela. And I too use it as a sign that I need to sharpen my game and be clearer :)
