We went away for the weekend and Axel was left in the hands of my mother in law who I don’t trust with dogs really, but only because she just doesn’t understand them and never had a pet. I was more or less worried she would get overwhelmed but she insisted watching him.

All was well she said, he slept mostly and wanted cuddles. Ate and drank fine went to the bathroom fine. He was very excited to see us when we got home and played with his toys. I took him for a quick walk and he was very happy as usual.

Then he napped for a couple hours then we went out in the backyard. He ran around with his new toy, then chewed on his chew which is just a big block of wood from the pet store, it’s a soft wood so won’t cause any harm when digested.

We came inside and he drank a half bowl of water then lied down and slept for a half hour or so. Then he got up and went to the door, I was about to get up to let him out when I heard this gush of water so I ran over thinking he stepped on his water bowl, but no, he threw up all that water he drank, plus some small strings of the wood and some undigested kibble. Was so shocked as normally he retches a few times before throwing up but this was out of nowhere. So outside we go, he ran downstairs so I followed, he threw up again, this time digested food. He tried to eat it which made me happy. So upstairs we go and I help OH clean up the huge mess.

Axel lies down again at my feet for an hour and sleeps. He gets up and goes to the door so I let him out right away and he ran downstairs so I followed. He threw up two more times. This time maybe a handful at most each of digested food. He didn’t try to eat it this time but I was calling him away so I’m not sure.

Back inside we go and he naps for an hour and a half and no more throwing up. Dinner time now and he’s asking for food, so I gave him 1/4 of what he would normally get. He ate it all and stared at me asking for the rest of his food, which I didn’t give.

It’s been 45 minutes since he ate and he has kept it all down. He finally just drank some water, half a bowl again. So it’s just a waiting game now.

So now I’m worried that maybe he has a blockage of some sort, maybe he ate something that my mother in law didn’t see. She’s not very good at being observant....

My gut tells me that he maybe drank too fast and just regurgitated, but then why did he throw up two times much later than the first time...? which then makes me think blockage.

    Sigh.

Its the waiting game I afraid. He could have picked a bug or eaten something or just drank too much. Just hope he's ok he's such a lovely boy.

Yes, he could have just gobbled in his excitement to be home. If they eat or drink too fast they just chuck it all back up.

Keep a close eye for any lethargy, abnormal or lack of poos or more vomiting- get straight to the vet if there are any of these.

I’ve played this waiting game many times

Hope he feels better soon. It could be excitement and gulping water.

I was thinking this too; our dogs are often much more sensitive than we realize. I'm sure Poppy's last seizure was because OH was away for 10 days - once he was back it was as though all her pent up anxiety became too much and had to be let out.

I hope Axel is better, and there is no more vomiting.

Vet immediately if you think blockage. It's a serious, life threatening condition and I know two dogs who have died.

Personally, I have seen my dogs do the same and I have not vetted. Excitement and perhaps some unauthorized treats at his Grandma's could do it.

Another idea, did a bunch of mushrooms pop up in your yard and he ate some? I think you are in ONtario too? I just took a mushroom ID course, fascinating, we DO have some that are poisonous. It's been a great summer and fall for mushrooms with all the rain.

Thanks everyone, he slept through the night with no more upsets so that was good. He was begging for his breakfast this morning so I gave him his usual. I’m thinkinng it was just drinking way too fast and the excitement of having his people back, I no longer think blockage.

He goes to daycare today so at least I will know right away if he does throw up or have diarrhea.

I am in British Columbia :) I did wonder if he ate a mushroom, we do have them in our yard, right where he poops. He walks over them all the time but never eats them. We pick them up once a week regardless because I do get anxious worrying about the what if.

Odie did eat a mushroom three years ago, it was a horrible experience. He threw up 32 times in 45 minutes. That was the longest drive to an emergency vet, as we were at our cabin. By the time we got home he had lost 1 pound of body weight, he was only 3.5 pounds then. Odie had to be hospitalized for almost three days. Ever since then I am so cautious with mushrooms as Odie still goes for them, thankfully axel doesn’t seem bothered.
