Well, some of you may remember that I was posting about Luna having issues sleeping in her bed during the day without peeing in her sleep. Other than that, she's great at house training, but we went ahead and did a urinalysis on her. The vet said that she had a bacterial infection "of the rods," and that antibiotics were needed, so she prescribed augmenten. I was at the pharmacy to pick it up... it was a $200 med. I feel awful because I can't afford that right now :/ so I left without the med. I feel awful... I'm trying to get a hold of the vet to see if there's an alternative option that's less expensive, but the vet's in a meeting another hour or so.
Re: Bacterial infection found in urine. Gosh, that's a huge amount of money for antibiotics! Could the pharmacist help with advice as to whether this is a more affordable alternative?
Re: Bacterial infection found in urine. That is a criminal amount to charge,we can buy amoxicillin and penicillin over the counter in Dubai for a about $10... I did once buy a course and I think it was amoxicillin but it was under a different name and it was even cheaper....now what that meant to the quality and effectiveness I don't know but they seemed to do the job just the same.....call your vet tomorrow and see if they can advise you,I'm so sorry x
Re: Bacterial infection found in urine. I found out from one of the Vet Asst. that the doc called in a 28 day supply of augementen/amoxicillin. That has me even more worried thinking that Luna's got something so serious that she needs a full, one month supply. I'm trying to work things out with my husband so that we can try to either pay this today, and start treating her, or at least get with the vet and see what they have to say. I have no idea how she got something like this....
Re: Bacterial infection found in urine. I live in the UK and my vet would consider people paying by installments if they couldn't afford the initial outlay. Maybe your vet would consider doing the same? My dog had a bacterial infection of the lower bowel and needed a 6 week course of antibiotics.
Re: Bacterial infection found in urine. Sometimes things can just be hard to shift (eg because of where they are in the body), so need a long course. I wouldn't become worried just because it's a 28 day course I hope you can work something out so that you can start treating your pup. I'm sure it's a very stressful situation.... Let us know how you go.
Re: Bacterial infection found in urine. That is extortionate!! !! !! ! Could you get the generic version - non-branded - that is called Co-Amoxiclav here for humans, I guess the same for animals. The human stuff costs about £5 or £6 for a weeks course in the UK. Are you able to use your prescription and shop around online for it?
Re: Bacterial infection found in urine. UPDATE: Luna's now on antibiotics, and has been for about a week now. I found out that there was a different brand that I could get that was cheaper, so that's the route I went with for her meds. So far, it's hard to tell if she's "feeling" better. I don't even know if she's in pain or anything from the infection... so it's sort of confusing. I just know that she isn't NEARLY as into her kibble as she used to be. Most of the time she doesn't eat much at her meal times, and just leaves the food for later I guess, but eventually eats it. It's like she's not hungry at her meal times anymore, so I don't know if that's related to her meds or not. I'm going to call the vet again tomorrow and see if they can give me advice about that. Poor little thing.
Re: Bacterial infection found in urine. Hope you notice her picking up soon. Great to hear that you managed to get hold of some antibiotics, and hopefully for a lot less than the huge price you were originally quoted...
Re: Bacterial infection found in urine. Glad to hear she is on meds too. I do hope they fix her up....but all antibiotics can cause tummy upsets. Sometimes just nausea othertimes frank vomiting or diarrhoea. Trouble is a urine infection could cause that too. Just keeping my fingers crossed for you.
Re: Bacterial infection found in urine. Glad you managed to get some meds Every time Harley is on antibiotics her appetite decreases - might be the same with Luna? Hope she picks up quickly
Re: Bacterial infection found in urine. Glad you managed to get some cheaper meds, that's a horrific amount to have to spend just on the medication alone! She might be off her food if the tablets are making her feel a bit nauseous, antibiotics sometimes have this effect in humans so I wouldn't be surprised if they affect dogs the same way.
