Hi people im carl and this is bella she is now 13 weeks. When she was 8 week she had a visit to the vet for vaccinations flea and wormed. All went well. 2 weeks later for her 2nd set and micro chip. The vet really stabbed her hard with the microchip injection which really showed the next day. 24 hours had passed and bella had a huge swelling where her microchip was implanted on top of her right shoulder... this swelling, no kidding was the size of a golf ball and she was in pain. I rang the emergency vet who gave her some anti biotics and adviced to have an ice patch on to reduce swelling. All this was free. The swelling went down and she was fine until yesterday when i have noticed all of a sudden she has a bald patch in the exact same place. I have attached a pic. Will this be ok ? Will it grow back? She eats. Drinks. Play. All fine with no had signs??? [attachment deleted by admin]
Re: bald patch on 13 week chocolate lab Your photo hasnt come through. I would change vets and go to a different one for a check up. You dont want a vet who stabs a puppy that hard for the microchip - it really shouldnt be like that.
Re: bald patch on 13 week chocolate lab Your poor girl and poor you - it must have been so stressful. When they put the chip in they are meant to push the needle all the way in (but under the skin). Maybe the swelling was just caused by an infection, rather than the needle going in deeply. I guess the emergency vet diagnosed an infection at the site, since antibiotics were prescribed. I'd expect that her fur will grow back but these things (i.e. growing fur back) can take many weeks, so don't worry if you don't see anything happening yet. Eventually, if it's going to grow back, you should start to see very fine downy fur coming through. Glad that she has recovered otherwise
Re: bald patch on 13 week chocolate lab Poor little sausage . I'm a Microchipper and I've never had to stab anything hard ever. It's totally unnecessary, as the needle is as sharp as a scalpel and slips through the skin easier than a knife through butter, which is why, even though it's a big needle, most dogs don't even notice it's been done. It sounds as if the area developed an infection (abscess) under the skin and this is what's caused the fur to drop out. The ABs got rid of the infection, but the damage to the hair follicles was already done, hence the bald patch. The fur "should" grow back in time, just remember Labs only really have a hair growth spurt twice a year (after moulting out the old coat), so it might take a while to cover if you've missed the hair growing slot. I too wouldn't be seeing that vet again.
Re: bald patch on 13 week chocolate lab I don't know where my pictures are that I have uploaded can anybody help with this please
Re: bald patch on 13 week chocolate lab There is a section on technical help which might help you. This is the link http://www.thelabradorsite.com/forums/index.php/board,14.0.html (hope that works) To post a picture you need the "address" of it and need at the end. I use dropbox, others use photobucket. Not sure if this helps you at all. I'm not very technical, but if you check out the technical help section you should find the solution - it helped me!! jacqui

Re: bald patch on 13 week chocolate lab Welcome to the forum Carl and Bella, hope you enjoy the forum. Wow Bella is gorgeous, but so sorry for her, that looks nasty poor little love Really hope she recovers from her ordeal very soon. Helen
Re: bald patch on 13 week chocolate lab She has an appropriate name Poor soul - hope she gets better soon. We need to get our microchip replaced - some of them were faulty and they have decided all should be replaced just in case. Originally our vet suggested we wait until she was 6 months and get it done the same time as her spay, so this will be a bit of an experience, Lilly not being knocked out for it! I can believe the trochars are sharp though. I was at a demo for a hormonal implant and had inadvertently sliced my finger with the sharp bit - had no idea at all until 5 mins later I noticed blood dripping on my lunch plate. Welcome to Carl and Bella! Jacqui and Lilly
Re: bald patch on 13 week chocolate lab welcome carl and bella, she is beautiful, hope she is better soon poor love :'(
