Madge(19 weeks old) is coming along nicely in her SAR early stages training, taking things nice and slowly. She loves run aways and is starting show a lot of motivation when passing fresh human scent trails. Stock test is no bother for her. Biggest issue I'm having is getting a que out of her, nothing seems to get her excited enough for her to bark.. Anybody had any experince with a shy dog when it comes to barking on command?

    Many thanks,
    Stephen.

My first Labrador was a very quiet and 'polite' dog and although I tried very hard I could not teach him to bark on cue. He simply would not bark at me or while looking at me.

He did bark when someone came to the door, though, and I could've set up situations to take advantage of that, building in a cue when I knew for sure he'd bark. Are there any situations like that in which your dog will reliably bark?

We tried that last night and she just came & sat next me waiting for me to let the 'Knocker' in!! I'm hopeful as she grows in confidence it will come...Fingers crossed.

Well, looking on the positive side, there are a lot of people who will be envious of your lovely quiet dog :) As she gets older she may find her voice.

Dr. Coren wrote about that. He found the client's dog would bark if startled so they cooked up situations where Dr. Coren would suddenly pop out of the bushes, prompting the dog, a Lab, to give out a surprised Woof and went from there.

Not really useful at all but Homer barks when hubby asks him if he's a Poodle! Homers answer is always a loud bark in indignation. I've no idea how he trained Homer to do this or why.
