I was at the other end holding his head, so i did not get a look other than the vets face

I bet the vet's face said it all :) Good to have it seen to - I'm sure it feels better now for Barley, do you think?

When I put my dog on a different diet I always thought that it was the reduction in preservatives that made a difference, rather than being grain free. The home made diet he had wasn't grain free - it was basically just fresh food. But I don't really know what made the difference. He just stopped itching and chewing his feet when we switched to a 'fresh food' diet. Mind you, it is extra work to home prepare a balanced diet for a dog.... These days it's a bit easier - we buy Obi a frozen version of what we used to feed our dog (it's an Australian brand though, so not very helpful for most people on this site, unfortunately).

Hopefully at the beginning of next year he will be moved onto a raw food diet so that might help we will just have to wait and see.Yes his face did say it all, he seems a happier this morning so it might have helped

My previous dog was terribly itchy as well....I think it was the chicken in his food that did it. Switched to a lamb and rice formulation and problem solved....

Barley is back at the vets on Wednesday for a check up to see if the antibiotics have sorted his anal glands out, i am not holding out too much hope as he is still itching and chewing his back side, but we will have to wait and see. His itching is under control at the moment, so i am hoping that it continues to improve and we can stop it for good

So he is slightly better, but still not right, they emptied his glands again and they were just full of puss, no blood this time. He has another week's worth of antibiotics and that should clear it fully, he only needs to go back if we think he is not right, if not then just leave him alone. It was not as smelly this time either :)

I hope they do, as the 2 weeks worth of antibiotics has cost just over £70
