I use medium and large kongs for my two, and they're two years of age. The large were far too large for them as small puppies, but they do fine with both sizes now. Neither of my dogs are power chewers, and still have their puppy kongs. They only have slight dent marks in them - you'll have to wait and see what your pup is like as to whether you need to go onto the red or even the black ones
Totally agree about the harness. Although....I've had 2 puppies in Puppia harnesses and this time, I went off them a bit. The hook at the back is too far up, and there is a bit of a sort of pinch action if the puppy lunges to get to something. And both my dogs have ended up hating harnesses...Betsy not as much as Charlie, but only because I knew and spotted the signs early enough. Betsy is in a flat collar already (at 4 months). But she is amazingly good on her lead (at least for now). I don't know of a better design, but I'd have a look round if you can and see if there is a mesh harness available with a back hook further down the back.
Thanks. The dog behaviourist recommended this harness: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Bunty-Adju...&qid=1470654980&sr=8-9&keywords=puppy+harness Can you tell looking at that if it would be any better?
Interesting, Julie, I didn't know anything at the time I had mine in them! If you see anything better, please let me know. Good Betsy walking so nicely already! Long may it continue
It looks (from the front) exactly like the Puppia harnesses, I don't know what the back is like though. I don't know of a better design, so you could try it and see how you get on. My tips would be: Be careful how you put it on, get the puppy to stick his/her head through it for a bit of chicken or whatever for a few days. Sit on the floor with the puppy and give lots of treats for having the harness put on. Put it on to feed the puppy, then take it off. Then hopefully, by the time you come to attach the lead, the puppy will love the feeling of the harness anyway.
10 days to do more shopping, then! You may need a heavier water bowl to avoid spills (and so it can't be carried around). Old towels are useful for mopping up puppy and floor too. Don't forget to post some photos!
Thanks, yes we have now thought about getting a heavier water bowl as read after we bought them that they're better. We're off to Devon at the weekend to visit family, then pick puppy up on the way home!
Ah we had a dog place mat. Xena thought it was great fun to pull around - water everywhere. We immediately removed the place mat. Best suited for cats lol. Do you have a treat pouch? They come in all shapes and sizes and prices. You can even go to an outdoors/climbing shop and get chalk pouches which are apparently cheaper. I waited weeks before buying one - wish I hadn't. So much easier than fishing around in my pocket! Just be careful bending over - treats everywhere! Learnt that one the hard way too.
Edsel still loves cardboard boxes! He thinks the UPS, FedEx and USPS drivers are angels sent with gifts from heaven!
Cardboard boxes.....great for the pup.....a mess for you but they have great fun with them. Ditto plastic bottles but I take off the cap first because that can get into their mouth and choke them....also make sure the bottle doesn't have sharp areas after it's been bitten....the sound is what they love I think. As to fabric toys, Cooper just totally destroys them in seconds....not a one has lasted more than five minutes so I just dont buy them. Nylabones and Kongs...the best! You are in for a wonderful adventure....please keep us posted.
Dang and I thought I spoiled Stryker. Stryker doesn't care much for cardboard. He likes his plastic bottles but I watch him and check the plastic very closely. I have a friend who has one of those Dachshund dogs that ate some plastic and ended up in the vet for plastic poisoning. Apparently he was left alone a bit to long with a few plastic bottles and completely ate them. I guess it's really bad as the vet kept him for almost a week giving fluids and medication. So just use caution when giving plastic items to your pets.
How I love puppy shopping, I have a couple of Turtle mats as they are brilliant for little puppy paws when the weather turns wet (like today) and you can wash and tumble dry them too. Certainly not cheap but well worth the extra money. Mabel's favourite toy was a Petstages Puppy Cuddle Pal, although I never heated the tiny wheat pack as I was worried about her chewing it. In fact she had quite a few Petstages toys. Regarding Kongs at the ripe old age of 20 months she still has her original puppy kongs but the kong goodie bone lasted a couple of weeks. Enjoy your shopping and those early weeks they grow up far too quickly (although it won't seem it at the time)
