Thanx MaccieD! She will be going down to play with them again in another week .... Jack and I are going away and they will take care of Maui .... hope they all survive! LOL!!
mmomom you're making me really jealous now - you've just got back from Florida and you're off on holiday again in another week, not fair . Hope you're off to somewhere nice. Maui will have a great time while you're away
MaccieD ... yes, it's been a crazy time around here lately! We are going to a Wedding in CT Sunday and returning on Monday night. One of the Vet Techs at our Play Care/Vet Office is staying at the house with Maui those two days. Then the following Wednesday we drive to FL to deposit Miss Maui with my daughter and her friends Cocoa and Sierra ... and of course our two granddaughters who just love taking care of her while we go to Hawaii to celebrate our 46th Wedding Anniversary. We will be in Maui (her namesake) for a week and then in Kauai for two weeks. We have Vacation Clubs we use, not 'wealthy' as it may sound! LOL!! I am really looking forward to some REST and RELAXATION ... but mostly SLEEP!! However, I sure will miss my little girl while away! She's doing so well with her training now and really learning some manners. Our walks, about 2 miles in the morning, and if it's cool enough, at night are really going well. She's happy, well adjusted, so loving and just a joy at a little over 5 months! When we return she will have to slow down tho ... she's getting Spayed the Friday after we return so will have to have some 'down time' while she heals and probably some major 'spoiling' from me! We're both going to miss our walks and I'm sure she will miss the two days she goes to Play Care with all her buddies! Thanx for the interest and kind words MaccieD! How's Juno doing?
mmomom I'm still jealous - 3 weeks in Hawaii doesn't sound at all bad to me. Vacation Clubs sound a great idea if you can jet off for such a lovely holiday, and celebrate you 46th wedding anniversary at the same time. You're going to miss those walks while you're on holiday. It amazed me when I went over to England for a few days at the end of August how tired I felt walking Juno when I got back because I hadn't been taking that sort of exercise and I was only away for 4 nights . So to keep you in shape for your return we want at least one good walk a day , not forgetting that Maui will be a month older, fitter and stronger. When Juno was spayed she was pretty much back to normal the next day, the vet had just said shorter walks on lead and no running, jumping while she had the stitches in, but as Juno is a quiet girl it didn't affect her too much despite the fact that her spay followed her restricted exercise for her first limping episode so she actually spent around 4 weeks without a good run or walk. Lots of fun and cuddles indoors seems to work though Juno's doing pretty well after my panic a couple of weeks back when she started limping again. A few days of rest and restricted exercise seems to have worked so I've spent the last week building her walks back up and she seems to be free from any limping or stiffness at the moment. Her skin infection that had flared again also seems to have improved/disappeared with the antibiotics and shampoo sessions. She has been such a good girl being lifted in and out of the bath and standing to be showered and shampooed and then rubbed dry. We've practiced our "Leave" while standing in the bath waiting for the 5 minutes between the 2nd shampoo and the final rinse, and we've also learnt a "Check-in" which I've used the last couple of days on walks. She is such a good girl, just can't believe she's nearly 15 months now
Hi MaccieD! Well, we are back from Maui and Kauai and our own Miss Maui has had her surgery for spaying and chipping done. She did well ... however, she has a lot more energy than I would like! LOL!! Vet says keep her quiet ... no running, jumping, etc. It's going to be a long 10 days or so! She's been awfully good, but poor thing doesn't understand so makes it hard. I know she misses her walks as I do as well! So glad to hear Juno is doing well with her ailments too! Hope that still is the case, please update. We had a change of plans at the last minute on where Maui would stay while we were gone ... since she was so close to possibly going into heat, had developed a UTI just before we were going, and also my daughter was going to be away for a couple of days with her mother in law staying at the house, the Vet suggested we leave her with the trainer instead. There was a lot of last minute details to take care of in our change of plans and it cost us more, but was so worth it! The trainer has 3 boys and 4 dogs of his own, plus she was able to continue with her Play Care schedule going to work with him, so she was very happy! And, one of the benefits was she continued training and is doing SO well! We had a great time in Hawaii ... really amazing trip! And, you'll be glad to hear we did LOTS of hiking and keeping active ... even Kayaked up the Wailua River to the most beautiful Falls! Neither one of us had kayaked before and it was really fun. Just getting caught up on everything here and checking in to see how you are! Do hope all is well.
Hi Mmomom , great to hear from you. I'd been wondering if you were back from your holiday. I'm still really jealous - 3 weeks in Hawaii sounds unbelievable. I bet Maui was excited when she saw after your holiday. Lovely to see the latest photos of Maui, she's grown so much but is looking gorgeous. It can be really hard after they've ben spayed trying to keep them from charging around, jumping and generally having fun. We did walk Juno though after her op, on lead only twice a day and where we wouldn't meet other dogs to reduce the risk of jumping around. Juno is fine at the moment after we had a limping episode last month so went back to restricted exercise and then gradually built up again to her normal walking routine. Fingers crossed she's fine at the moment but I'm very aware that we will have episodes of limping, it's a case of trying to restrict the frequency and severity of the episode. I've been having problems with my knee for the last couple of weeks and she has been a little star with me, particularly when my husband had to go over to the UK for work so I was having to try and manage 2 walks a day with her when I could hardly walk. The walk may have lasted around 30 minutes but the distance walked was what we normally do in 10 minutes. Just as well she loves retrieving balls in the gardens which is how we finished our walks to allow her to let off steam. The knee is gradually Improving after a trip to the UK to see my doctor. I'll be so, glad when we finally make the move back and health problems become easier to manage. Anyway, it's great to hear from you and look forward to, hearing more about Maui's progress and more photos.
Hi Rosemary! So glad I just browsed around and clicked on your name. In the past when I signed on here would be notice of a message reply. No so now. I think maybe because of all that was said and done a while back, I've been put on the black list or something, LOL!! I never heard back on the 'investigation' and think my ideas on taking care of my Maui just don't mix here, which is fine. I should probably just get your email to communicate. I truly don't think I belong here, and that's okay too. But, in any event, it was nice to hear a reply from you. Sorry about your knee ... do hope it improves, sounds terrible! And good to hear that Juno seems to be doing well, even with the restricted exercise. Maui is doing well. Again, still a lot more energy than I'd like, but the incision is looking good and we are dealing with it .... counting the days till we can do full exercise again tho! I'm thankful she stayed with the trainer as he continued with her training for the 3 weeks we were gone and it does make things easier. She sits on command (although she always did that), comes when called, lies down on command, waits till I tell her to eat (did that anyway too), waits at the door till I tell her ok to go out, does the leave well too. Sure does help under the circumstances. It's just that Maui still just always wants to 'play'!! LOL!! We also do a lot of petting and cuddling. She really is a happy, well adjusted, good girl. I totally forgot about the dates when I scheduled the surgery and we had planned to take Maui and go to my daughter's in FL this weekend to go Trick or Treating with our granddaughters, but the Vet said absolutely not. I know he's right, she would just get too excited with her pals Sierra and Cocoa, as well as the girls. Too much of a chance to take. Although I think at this point she wouldn't rip the incision, she still could affect the underlying muscles and cause swelling ... it is an abdominal thing after all. So, we will stay here. My son, his wife and my 17 month old grandson are going down and my husband will go with them as well ... so at least he can take pictures for me of the kids! Maui and I will hold the fort here continuing her recovery. Well here's some good wishes for your knee to feel better and Juno's limp to continue to get better as well!
You're very welcome to my email address, to keep in touch, and you can't have been blacklisted as you can post. If you're not getting the message notification it could be something has gone wrong in your settings. I try and train Juno on positive reinforcement methods but that doesn't mean I don't say No to her at times and she shows no ill effects from the lack of 100% positive training. For me the No just replaces "leave" and I do use "Ah ah" at times. Not all dogs are the same or react the same so such instances and I don't claim to be an expert trainer. What I do know is that my dog is pretty well balanced and pleasure to live with. Her recall is good, she isn't bothered by joggers, cyclists, kids in buggies, people in wheelchairs or meeting groups of young adults with learning and/or physical disabilities. For me I couldn't really ask for more, and I know Maui is pretty much the same. It's a shame you're missing out on the Halloween fun because of Maui's operation but it's best to be safe. I think being with 2 other dogs would probably be too much for her at the moment, she'll have great fun when she sees them next but without the risks following the operation. In the scheme of things it's a very short time for our girls to be kept quieter at home, and I'm sure she will have lots of fun with your son, his wife and toddler. One of the things I did with Juno after her spay was short training sessions during the day and games of find where she had to find her favourite toy and bring it to me for a treat.
Such absolutely gorgeous pictures. MaccieD poor thing with your knee. Fingers crossed for for you. These joints give us some problems don't they. I'm to have a new hip early next year. :roll eyes: as Mabel can now walk further than me. I'm thrilled to hear Juno is doing so well, these limping episodes are such a worry. I often think about her and hope she doing well. She really is a beautiful girl. I need to sort out photo bucket and post some photos of Mabel. Huge Labrador licks from Mabel x
Pilatelover The knee is better. The medication from the doctor is beginning to kick in and I've even managed to walk up the stairs without putting both feet on one step. It may take time to get up the stairs but it's great to be able to do something you take so much for granted. It's also great to be able to walk better with Juno, but she was so great with me hobbling along. Juno is fine at the moment, no limping (fingers crossed and a quick prayer) and enjoying chasing after balls through all the leaves in the garden. How are you going to manage Mabel while you have your hip replacement and recovery? You must get some photos of Mabel on to the forum, we really need to see her Hugs from me and licks from Juno
MaccieD glad everything is going well. Regarding my hip, it's been a bit of a shock as it was looking like I wasn't going to need a hip replacement for a good few years as the yoga, Physio and acupuncture were really working well. Unfortunately I've had a couple of falls, I hadn't even had a glass of wine. So I have devised a plan. Mabel is going to stay at doggie boarding for two weeks which covers the hospitalisation and initial recovery. During this time I'll be looked after by my youngest son. Weeks 3-4 my husband will take holiday and we will have Mabel home. After that my youngest will walk Mabel until I'm able to. If needs be Mabel can go back to doggie boarding. I've had offers of help but I'm not prepared to risk Mabel's elbows. My friends mean well but after the episode with her sister I literally can't ever put her in that situation again. I have been worrying myself sick over it, can't sleep and have eaten far too much chocolate and cake. I'm just worried Mabel will really suffer particularly her training. I now realise that is unlikely to happen as I thought I'd lost lots of behaviours because of restricted exercise but it's still there and 80% of the time she's a star. Okay we have a few issues but she's 11 months today we can work through them. My main concern is OH, he loves her to bits but he's hopeless with her. I did say yesterday she had better be kept in one piece. It's not meant to be a negative comment against him. I grew up with animals he only ever had a budgie.
