Hi everyone, I am new to puppies and the proud owner of an 8 week Black Lab Zola. I am looking for suggestions on the best thing to fill a Kong with. Zola seems to get more frustrated than calm when we put one in his crate
Hi @cazzap Welcome to the site. At the beginning of kong play make it easy for her to get things out of it. Kibble similar in size to the opening, only partially frozen. If she gets the treat easily, it will reinforces her desire to play with the kong. If she just gets frustrated she will lose interest in the Kong. When she gets more adept you can make it more difficult.
Easy Kong fillings for pups are typically either something that falls out immediately (bit boring) or something the pup can lick, like soft cream cheese, peanut butter (no xylitol in it, as that's toxic to dogs!), pate, wet dog food, mashed banana... Then you can try combining kibble and the above soft stuff and potentially freezing it to make it harder....
when we first gave Kyko a kong we just gave him mashed banana with a little peanut butter, he loves these but they don't keep him occupied for long as he can just lick to get the food out. Once he was used to that kong we moved him to cottage cheese & kibble frozen, the first time he had that it kept him going for around 2 hours as he still only licks at them and hasn't quite figured out to chew and throw them around
Some of the raw food we use comes in ice cube sized nuggets. Two of these push perfectly into a puppy kong, so, what ever you are feeding, you could potentially mush it, crush it, whatever, into an ice cube tray, freeze it, and then push them into a puppy kong. It keeps buddy occupied for a good while.
My wife mixes bits of cooked Chicken, with Natural Yoghurt and puts it in the freezer overnight, ready for the following day. Holly loves it.
