O - I forgot your question! I thought it was important to get out and about with Charlie as soon as I could, so went for vaccines as soon as the vet would give them - Charlie had kennel cough later, and I thought the risk of him getting it was low - but that's was my vet said too, might be different if your risks are different.

The other thing was Charlie didn't smell so good to me at first, but 2 days in and I was hooked on his delicious smell. So I wouldn't bath the pup - I remember thinking Charlie must be some kind of alien in a soft silky body emitting advanced behaviour pheromones that made me love him madly! (I'm besotted rather than totally mad....promise...).

Oh my goodness what a cutie!! It is like having a new baby, with all the fears and anxieties, but lovely moments of cuteness too! Welcome from Lisa and the big lug Simba, 9 month old chocolate lab/Newfie cross! Lots of help and support here, so don't be afraid to ask questions!

    Hi and welcome.

I am far from knowledgeable on the topic of vaccines etc. However having taken Penny to the vet for the first time last week I will share our experience. She received her first jab the morning of the day we collected her at 8 weeks old. Last Friday the day after she turned 10 weeks she was scheduled to have her second jab and microchip. As well as this the vet also recommended the kennel cough one, which we were happy to have. It was just a small squirt of liquid up her nose. As well as this she had a 2 in 1 worming and flee spot-on treatment and was weighed and checked, already 7.3Kg! All in all it cost us £73, we were really impressed, the service we received was fantastic and were given a welcome pack with a toy and treats for Penny too! I am not sure if it is better to stagger the jab and kennel cough stuff, but our vet was happy enough to recommend them at the same time.

It's fairly unlikely, however if anyone else should be within the Bristol area, I would highly recommend http://www.highcroftvet.co.uk/, the service was superb. It is worth noting that as this was our first visit to the vet both the worming/flee treatment and consultation was given free. Have a look around and I am sure you will find good offers too. We could have had a better deal, however Penny had her first jab before we got her so had no need for the new puppy deal (of whatever it may have been called).

    Tom

Edit - Was thinking to myself that seemed quite expensive as things were free, then I remembered they also helped us fit Penny for a harness which was also in the cost.

Well she's home & very whiney & not taking treats - she ate her dinner nicely at 1pm & has been drinking plenty of water - done one wee on grass outside but no poos yet - I keep taking her outside but she doesn't to need one. We've had her in the crate a few times for just a few seconds & let her out when she stopped whining & gave her a big fuss as I said treats not attractive yet. She is very tired & fell asleep in the car briefly. Should I put her in the crate if she is tired? I tried a moment ago but she started howling/whining this time so i waited til she stopped & then let her out - she's currently dozing by my feet.

Maybe just try some pieces of her dried food as treats. Pups are usually hungry all of the time, so she might eat that. However she may be a little withdrawn for a day or so if you have just got her. We didn't experience this with Penny but were informed that it is common. For the first couple of days we only used the crate at night which we kept next to the bed for 3 nights so she could have company. We then moved the crate to the kitchen which was an easy transition at which point I used treats to encourage her to walk in and out of her crate without closing the door, and then allowed her to walk in and fall asleep without closing the door and then eventually after a couple of days shut her in for naps about an hour long. It's worth the effort to build up the time and confidence in the day times in my opinion. As far as night time goes, I think everyone does it differently but I am now a firm believer that those first couple of nights with the crate in the bedroom really helped Penny to settle in her new surroundings without her mum, brothers and sisters. We also got up at night to help the toilet training, initially every 2 hours and then increased it each night, she has never had an accident at night so far, tonight we will try 7 hours! I think it just comes down to patience.

    Good luck!

    Tom

She's probably just a bit too unsettled to take treats. I know Riley can't eat if he's over excited or anxious. It's good that she's eaten her dinner just give her time I'm sure she'll be looking for any extra food soon!

Thanks guys - just had meal number 2 no problem - had bit more progress with crate - she has gone in of her own accord a few times so I have shut the door & she has stayed in longer without whining! Trying to stop my 4 yr old from getting her to chase him is something else though. x

Charlie is now a 3 poops a day pup but didn't poop on his first day with us. On his first day, I confined him to his carefully prepared poop area (there are foxes about where I live, and I wanted to be super careful what he sniffed at) again and again waiting for him to go - in the end my husband told me to let him go wander round a bit, and Charlie selected a good spot to poop in the middle of my asters... since then he has been regular as clockwork but always has a good wander round to decide on the most inconvenient place possible for me to reach with a scoop.

Hi I too am new at this, I brought Millie home a week ago yesterday, she's now 9 weeks old & settled in really quickly. I've been doing the "go wee wee's"whilst doing, "sit" when she sits etc & already in a week she sits & waits for her food (I should of got a dog before having children as I think the experience of the training would of helped ;) ) the 1st day Millie came home at 10:30 & didn't do number 2 till after boys got home from school but since then does 5 parcels a day, few accidents inside but I'm getting to know hints that she needs to go. Enjoy your puppy like I am mine & how lucky are we getting puppies in this glorious weather :D

Dont worry too much , they are often upset and anxious which can affect tiny tums , I`m sure she will soon present you with a prized poo , good that she is eating and drinking well . She will soon settle and get used to a routine , routines are so important,it makes pups feel secure and safe x

Riley didn't poo his first day with us, he saved it up and presented my husband with a perfect walnut whip on the kitchen floor whilst he was eating his breakfast ;D ;D ;D

She did one outside clever girl & last night was not too bad at all - she only whined/yapped for an hour - when we came down this morning however she had done a poo & jumped it all over her crate.
