It sounds to me like you need to have a good long chat with your vet, and find someone experienced who can help you with the whelping. Not just the stud dog's owner, but someone who will be there with you.
Ive done that AND chatted with the stud dog owner, i think the problem is that ive asked too many people to the point im getting so many different answers. Ive been reading the "Book of the Bitch" and i think thats going to be my bible as well as having the vet on standby!! Fingers and paws crossed lol
I'm sure it'll be fine. Stay calm, keep reading everything you can, it should all go fine but be prepared to step in and help should it be necessary. Read and re-read The Book of the Bitch. Here's a very brief article I found online, with advice about the umbilical cords: http://www.purina.co.uk/content/you...ancy-in-dogs/labour-and-giving-birth-for-dogs Finally, I know I'm repeating myself, but I do think the one thing that would help you most is talking to a bitch owner who has bred puppies and who is willing to be with you at the birth. Sounds like the stud dog owner is a bit busy - is there anyone else? As I understand it, dog births are usually less difficult than human births (puppies being much smaller), and complications are the exception rather than the rule - but it's always best to be prepared.
That's exactly what I had. It was on all the time for the first 3 weeks - it's quite small so puppies had a choice if they were too warm. When they were 3 weeks old the pad was only in the night. My mentor told me to avid heat lamp if my room is warm as it can dry mother's skin so she might be very itchy & uncomfortable.
Looking forward to see the picture Have you bought whelping kit? It's also worth to ask your vet to show you how to tube feed & also have a look at sponge feeding: https://youtu.be/sm4KdHiRsnM Fingers crossed you won't need that but it's good to be ready for everything. How's Jet doing?
I made my own whelping kit from items out of work lol. I work in a Hospital Pharmacy so have access to all kinds of things i need such as suction bulbs, gloves, sterile scissors and syringes etc. Jets still doing great and eating well. I can see her trying to run and then realising she cant. Her tummy is very stretched now and i just cant wait to get her back to herself again.
Oh lucky you I'm glad to read she's doing well A little bit of discomfort is normal but my girl was trying to be active nearly till her due date. Fingers crossed for you, Jet & healthy pups. Have you started your waiting list or are you waiting with advertising till the pups are born? Where's that picture of whelping box? Could do with a picture of happy mommy-to-be as well
Mummy to be and Whelping Box complete. (Just the heat mat to add, and have you noticed my wife got lino to match the dining room tiles lmao
My wife spotted liquid in a few places on the floor yesterday and i thought the kids had spilt milk, only to realise that Jet was leaking milk lol
Thanks Karen, my father in law is quite the handyman. Newspaper and blankets in it now, so she can nest when ready!
My friend who breeds the cats said leaking milk meant her kittens were imminent! Not sure if its the same for dogs.....
So just a wee update on how Jet is getting on. She is due this Saturday as it is 9 weeks from her first tie. She is still so affectionate to me and hardly leaves my side. She is waddling about poor thing and doesnt fancy her walks as much. She has begun to go off her food a little but still likes her wee treat biscuits and is drinking plenty of water. She tries to run, but then quickly realises she cant lol. So as the week goes on ill keep you all informed, im still working until Thurs and then im off from Friday and all of next week, although my wife is off on the sick at the moment so at least there is someone in the house if Jet begins to pup.
