Mummys still doing well. Still no sign of puppies lol. Ive noticed shes starting to dig around the fenceposts in our garden. Not sure if this is nesting etc?? But she never digs. Still eating well but just very slow and lying about alot, poor thing. I wish the puppies would come now for her sake.
When I was looking after the pups' mum, she lost her appetite only on the morning before they were born. So, if she's anything like yours, it could be imminent!
Shelby was eating quite fine till the morning when she gave birth. As Jet started digging in the garden don't leave her alone in there just in case. Are you checking her temperature or did you skip that? Have a torch & towel ready by the door to the garden & when you think she's close always take them with you when she wants to go. Many first timers think they need toilet while they are actually contracting. Observe - when she'll start heavily panting puppies are close. I was advised to have some vanilla ice cream in the freezer & offer her after first puppy is born as that cools them down & gives some energy. I also had some glucose & calcium syrup. Have a number to vet handy - check who's on duty during the weekend or after hours & inform them as soon as she starts. If she's visibly contracting for 2 hours with no pup take her to the vet - she might need oxytocin injection or C-section. ...and relax she might have them few days later That's all I could think of now - I hope that helps. Fingers crossed for healthy pups & easy whelp. Can't wait to see the pictures of little furry drops
Thanks to both of you. I was out at the pet shop today and neither had thermometers for dogs?!?!? Also visited the vets and had a chat with the vet whos due to be oncall over the next few days. She was very helpful and said im better being well prepared but that the likelihood is that Jet will take it all in her stride. Was also advised by the vet, that when shes whelping to give her porridge (made with water) and honey to boost her energy levels. Im off work now so ill be at home every day for the next week. As for torch etc at night, our back patio and side garden are lit up like a football pitch whenever anyones out in the garden at night, so thats covered. Excited yet apprehensive is how i feel!
I bought my thermometer on ebay so can't really advise where else to buy them. I heard about porridge but my mentor who's breeding for over 40 years said ice cream is better so I went that route It looks you're really good prepared so everything should go smooth. Also some first timers might be scared of her first pups - don't panic if she starts to growl at them etc. If that happens be firm, make her lie down, reassure her & latch pups. Might be too low calcium levels which needs vets' attention but might be just bitch's reaction to sth unknown.
No problem, i want to just say again that i really appreciate everyones advice on here. Jet seems to have went off her food completely this morning and has been sick in the garden. Shes also very quiet and constantly wanting outside, hopefully this is the sign of things starting. Tried porridge this morning and she wouldnt touch it at all, she was happy taking one of her treat biccies but that was it. Ill get some vanilla icecream today for her.
still nothing, took her out for a walk tonight and she was very slow but perked up when she got to the park. When we got home she has been heavy breathing but sleeping, she just looks so uncomfortable the wee pet. Going to sleep downstairs with her from now on until pups arrive!
Just wakened. Nothing yet, very quiet night and when i got up, Jet was still sleeping. She has eaten a little food this morning. Beginning to think i should be going 9 weeks from the second tie (which is Tuesday) rather than the first tie lol
She took just a couple of her treat biscuits yesterday and not much else. She has eaten a little "meaty" food this morning and a bit of toast, just seems to have went off the puppy kibble the last few days.
Well everyone, i think its on. Jet completely annihilated her flooring of her whelping box, so i guess this is what is called "nesting", ripped all the paper and pushed blankets out of the way. She was sick twice with frothy fluid and is now panting alot. Ill be beside her the whole way. Could be a long night ahead!
