For the past few days I've noticed drops of blood on the floor, and checked thors paws, mouth and ears but couldn't see anything particularly worrying so assumed he might have cut something but it seemed to stop. But this morning I've noticed more drops of blood, and it's coming out whenever his penis comes out. I can't see any cut or injury to it, and it isn't constant. When we got home he got quite excited and there was more than there had been before, probably 10 drops around the kitchen. Could it be an internal injury? I've Googled it and most advice is only for older dogs and it's generally just advising to get them neutered (in which case we're ahead of the game). Shall I just keep it clean with some salt water until Monday and get the vet to check? It's definately stopped now that he's calmed down.
Definitely vet on Monday, it could well be an UTI, crystals in his bladder or even a kidney infection. I'm guessing by your post he's already been neutered, If not an enlarged prostate could also be to blame. I would keep him quiet over the weekend, obviously if he gets worse, seems lethargic, starts drinking or peeing excessively or goes off his food you need to phone the vet. PS. When you do see the vet, try to get a urine sample to take with you.
My 5.5 yo boy had this late last year. He's intact. He didn't have a uti but his prostate was enlarged, although correct size for his age - apparently it gets bigger with age, hence why blood from penis is thought to be an old dog's issue. The ultrasound showed no signs of infection in the prostate, it was healthy, just big. My vet said blood from the penis of an intact dog with no other clinical signs is not an emergency (I don't know for a neutered dog), and she asked me to not come in, to wait and see and keep a log. She was interested to see if the blood went away before deciding on action. Thankfully it did go away after about a week I think, and hasn't come back. I did write a post about it then - although not sure if relevant to you with a neutered dog? Hi all, thankyou for the replies. Thor had his op today and it was very complicated. They couldn't find the second testicle, three incisions later they were on the verge of closing him up and having to wait for a more specialised surgeon to do the op, but they found it right behind his inguinal canal. They also ran tests on the cause of the bleeding, but couldn't find anything of concern. She has said its possible he was just very very excited and strained himself. He's still very groggy because of the amount of meds he's had today and seems to be in pain but he's settled now with me sleeping on the floor next to him so hopefully he picks up tomorrow. I'll keep this updated
Poor Thor! Hopefully he'll recover quickly. Must be painful after the digging around - glad they found it eventually!
Lol, I was a little confused there as I thought he'd already been neutered. So pleased his op went well and they found the missing testicle eventually. Hopefully he'll heal quickly and have no more problems.
Hope Thor's pain subsides quickly, poor lamb. Glad they managed to complete the procedure in one op, eventually.
Hi guys, Thor had a check up at the vets yesterday to have bandages off and a check over, they were really happy with how he was healing. And no blood since Saturday from his penis which is great. But tonight he's developed a fairly large (maybe 2 inches square) section of red dry skin to one side of the largest incision on his belly. It's to one side of the incision and doesn't seem to be bothering him but it's come from nowhere. Is this normal healing that he'll be red, or something to get checked out? Seems strange that it's just one side of the incision. Or could it be bruising from the amount of digging about they had to do?
So glad he's ok maybe just give the vet a ring if you're concerned. I know he's had a bit of a rough time hope he gets better soon
Ooh that looks nasty! And that is a huge incision - sorry, I know nothing about it, but I thought being neutered only involved the testicles being removed???
