Re: Bravecto tablets against ticks Thank you Lochan for taking the time to write all that. It's a very helpful and useful explanation. So far so good then Karen. Are you removing the dead ticks or will they just drop off ?
Re: Bravecto tablets against ticks My girl is flat out after a morning training in meadows with a deep stream running through it. Very pleased that she could go in the stream without me worrying about poisoning any aquatic creatures, or without washing off the x-spot oil. Brushed a couple of ticks off during the training session, so there are doubtless more and this will be a real test of how well the Bravecto is doing. I've groomed her carefully since we came home, but usually one or two ticks manage to slip underneath my radar and attach. I'll report back!
Re: Bravecto tablets against ticks You and Poppy are going to be an excellent pair of "trial subjects" for us Karen. Lochan.......hurry up and go on holiday! ;D
Re: Bravecto tablets against ticks Gave Poppy her Milbemax worming tablet yesterday. No tummy troubles (despite Son giving her his leftover chili con carne, while I was out!!! ). In addition to the several live ticks that I brush off her fur after each walk, I continue to find one or two attached but dead and shriveled ticks each day. They are not enlarged, so I am thinking they don't have time to really get going before the Bravecto kills them. I am very pleased with the results so far. I found a small, but alive and kicking, and attached, tick behind my knee yesterday… Yuk.
Re: Bravecto tablets against ticks Wow, you have an incredible number of ticks around. A real test for the Bravecto, which sounds great so far.
Re: Bravecto tablets against ticks Perhaps you should do a human Bravecto trail as well Karen. ;D It sounds like its killing the ticks quite quickly once they are attached if they aren't starting to swell. I missed a tick on Murphy once. It fell of when it was full and was that big I heard the thud !!!!
Re: Bravecto tablets against ticks Thank you Lochan, it is good to have such a clear explanation and to understand how each product works.

Re: Bravecto tablets against ticks Son had a really nasty one on his back yesterday; I had to use the tick remover to get it out. It was partly engorged, too… Keeping a close eye on the bite site and applying topical antiseptic cream at regular intervals. Hopefully there'll be no problems. You have to keep an eye on the bite to make sure it doesn't become infected; but also if a red ring develops around it, or if you get any cold or flu symptoms or muscle pain, then you have to go to the doctor because those can be the first symptom of Lyme disease. Ugh, I HATE those little blighters.
Re: Bravecto tablets against ticks OMG Karen . It's like a plague of ticks around you. :-\ Is there any human repellent against ticks ? Poppy seems sorted it's you and your's that need the human equivalent.
Re: Bravecto tablets against ticks No human repellant I know of, although stuff with DEET in it is supposed to help (like Jungle Formula) Keeping your exposed skin covered, tucking trousers into socks : and being vigilant is the best defence I think. Up here they are pretty reluctant to treat with antibiotics unless there is evidence of the red ring rash and a temperature. I think the guidelines say doxycycline 100mg twice a day for 4 weeks which is a hefty dose, not exactly kind on your stomach and causes photosensitive reactions - which is why they aren't used "just in case" after a tick bite. After a tick bite you have to monitor it for redness for 30 days afterwards. And if it has been attached for 48hrs or more, and/or is very engorged, it carries more of a risk in transferring nasties. Hate them. Got one off Lilly's chin earlier. Guess it was the sniffing in the verge that was RANK with deer scent this morning

[/quote] It's the main reason I always walk in long trousers and often my Dubarry boots even in the summer.....horrid, horrid things!
Re: Bravecto tablets against ticks When I was a camp counsellor on a Camp USA in Delawere, the kids all had Avon SSS packed in their trunks.they said it was because of the ticks....I don't think this was the case but it did a great job repelling the mosquitoes and horseflies! It is still widely used in Dubai for its repellent properties!
Re: Bravecto tablets against ticks I bought 2 bottles of the Avon stuff before Scott went on his first Outdoor Activity thingy with the school. I ended up throwing it out as I didn't like the smell. Apparently Smidge was developed as a direct result of the Avon SSS (urban myth? dunno) and bizarrely the Avon SSS appears as the second item in the Amazon list when I looked for the Smidge. They sell it all over the West coast and islands for our native beasties.
Re: Bravecto tablets against ticks Ooh horrible Karen to have them attach themselves to you. David quite often comes back from a walk with a tick attached and Thomas too when he camps with the Explorers. I walk in bare legs and never have a problem. Thanks for all the updates on the Bravecto, it looks very promising so I am going to ask my Vet on my next trip x
Re: Bravecto tablets against ticks Is there a tick map, or list of areas in Great Britain where there are a high level of tick infestation. In over 20 years of dog walking I have never met one. If it is beginning to be a problem then I'll have to take steps to protect Molly, otherwise I prefer to keep medication to a minimum.
