I'm now thinking of bands of public health bods marching around fields counting ticks :). And who knew there were so many different ticks?

Very interesting, thank you Julie. I wonder what USE ticks are in the world, apart from to spread disease and gross people out?

Six weeks on, and I can report great success. The worst time for ticks has now passed, but they are still around in the woods and long grass. However, Poppy does not seem to be picking up any ticks, hooray! Also, two of her doggy pals had fleas, but she didn't get any. Coupled with the fact that Bravecto is not poisonous to water life, it seems to be very effective and does not need tobe re administered often. I am a convert. :)

Glad it's worked so well Karen.

I think you probably mentioned this somewhere but I can't find it sorry how often do you give a dose to cover the dog for fleas and ticks ?

Thankfully we don't have much of a problem with ticks but just incase and also for fleas I think I will give it ago.

I love it too. Just back from 10 days in Tick Central in The Highlands. No problems whatsoever and the dogs were running through heather moors daily. It lasts 3 months and does fleas too. No problems with environmental contamination, marvelous stuff.

I will give another dose in September; that will be enough for the autumn surge of ticks/fleas, and then I won't give her any more until next spring. :)

I asked my vet about these, well, the vet nurse (who answered the phone). Disappointingly, she knew nothing about them and just said she would call Bayer about the safety of giving Advocate and Advantix together (I asked because the senior vet told me he thought both Advocate and Advantix was too much, then Charlie got covered in ticks :-\ ). Bah.

Anyway, I'll try again (will book an appointment to speak with a vet) when I get back to London. But for now, Charlie has had a dose of Advantix as the ticks here seem ferocious.

Unless I can get some good advice about how Bravecto interacts with other treatments, I'm minded to go with Milbemax and Advantix (which will reduce ear mite protection over what he has now), instead of Advocate, Advantix and Drontal (for tapeworm). I would like to try the Bravecto though.

Will Bravecto be available at all Vets now?

This definiately sounds the way to go as Frontline is barely lasting 4 weeks for ticks, a complete waste of money :( Thanks for all the updates this is really helpful xx

Julie, we use Drontal in addition to the Bravecto.

Going to the Vet on Saturday for Charlie's yearly booster, I am going to ask about Bravecto but wondered is it expensive? Thanks x

I was going to ask question about price.

I took my cousins dog to our vet last week and asked if he had Bravecto. He told me he'd ordered just one box but couldn't justify prescribing it due to the price as its only a profilactic. He said it was about £30 wholesale so more with his mark up (honest of him).

I was going to ask what others had paid. ???

I got mine along with vaccines and a check up but did ask, and I think it was around £32.
A little more expensive than the Frontline but I have no confidence in that, and never seem to be able to find the right time inbetween swims, beach trips and poo-roll baths to get it on effectively.

Thanks Jac, is it just 1 tablet every 3 months or is it longer? No faith in Frontline any more either, had to do my 2 again and didn't even get 4 weeks since the last application :( x

I was going to ask the same Helen.

Is that £32 for one tablet which lasts three months ?

Yep - around that price for 3 month cover. And I think tick season is 6 months roughly so 2 per year (I don't really bother over winter - bad me!)

Just had a look at list prices for some of the common flea and tick preps. Bravecto is about a third more expensive than Advantix, but when you consider it is not affected by swimming and does not cause environmental issues it seems reasonable. Also in the field it is VERY effective, much more so than many of its competitors. Nothing more expensive in my opinion than a product that doesn't work...seems to work out at about £10 a month for a labrador
