I am looking around for a new puppy after losing my old pal before christmas. One problem I had with my last dog was he would NEVER get back in the car after I brought him home from oxford to the wirral on the day we picked him upfrom his mother.
He was so car sick and would not eat or drink on the way home despite several stops, by the time we got him home he could barely stand up poor lad- and that was him for the next 11 years he would not go in a car despite any and all persuasion.
I think he was mentally scarred for life about travelling in cars -I tried him as a pup in the car with tailgate open but he started panting /drooling. I associated it with food by offering him treats in the car on the drive - but he wouldnt eat them.
I drove up my street with him to the fields where I walked him thinking the association with his favourite pastime - walking would do the trick - its 500yds from my house and he threw up by the time I had driven about halfway, each and every time I tried and got himself into such a state panting and drooling - I gave up after a few weeks.
I want my next dog to travel well in the car but I am looking at a pup 2 hrs drive from home and dont want to make the same mistake again , but not sure how I get around this if this one turns out to be another bad traveller in a car .
    Any guidance would be appreciated.
I trained him to retrieve, walk to heel , he was a dream to own apart from his total aversion to car travel which narrowed his and my horizons for the whole time I owned him.
I would have loved to take him camping . to the seaside etc, but it was never possible. and that always made me sad.
I miss him like crazy though .
