Just a quick question seeking your views please ... Wilson is 9 months old on Monday and weighs around 24kg. His daddy has bought a Nylabone Extreme Chew (chicken flavour, yum) but has picked up in error a Medium size for 0-16kg. The guidance says the chew should be large enough to encourage chewing from the side rather than the top and bottom but I suspect Wilson would chew the rounded ends. Am I safe to give it to him do you think? (He'd be supervised of course.) Thank you!
Give it a try and see how he chews it. Dogs are all different. Tatze is a chomper and can’t have them. Keir and Zaba gnaw at them and they are fine. .
Thank you. I feel a bit of a numpty asking in the first place because I could have simply given it to him to see what happened but I just wasn't sure. I'll see what he makes of it!
Better safe than sorry. My pups are allowed bones but Tatze broke her tooth on one, a big back tooth which had to be removed. So I’m ultra careful now. Any chomping and that’s it, no chew. .
Ooh yes, I do worry about broken teeth. Wilson occasionally has an antler and I cringe sometimes at the loud cracking as he chews on it. I keep a very close eye on him and he only has it for a short time as a treat. Just given him the Nylabone and he's chewing the ends, as I suspected, but all well so far!
Let us know how you get on. I've had to ban Nylabones because Tuppence broke the tip off one of her canine teeth - fortunately with no dire results. Wispa had always enjoyed chewing them, but I can't risk it now with chompy Tuppy!
I no longer allow nylabone. When Ashima as 3 months old she chewed the ends off and swallowed them. I was very lucky it didn’t cause any problems. If you allow it I’d personally make sure it was under constant supervision.
Well there I was, worried about giving this chew to Wilson and he's not interested anyway. He's had a little nibble on one end but has never spent more than 10 seconds on it. Not interesting enough I guess. Now give him an antler or a Himalayan yak chew and he's completely mesmerised and occupied for as long as I let him ...
Wow that's a story to learn from. I try to keep an eye on whatever Wilson is chewing - I get quite nervous sometimes!
What’s scary is I was sitting right there - not paying close attention because I was so happy to be getting a bit of a break. It happened during the “dark days” of puppyhood.
I know just what you mean. It only takes a second or a little glance away and a distraction (for me, not the dog!) and he's eaten something he shouldn't have. Like most labs, I imagine, he can steal and gobble something in about one-tenth of a second. Ashima looks gorgeous by the way!
Thanks! She’s a sweetie. Almost 6 months. On to managing the jumping and the mulch! And then on to something else...
