Maisie seems to often get carsick when she travels in the car too long. I was thinking of trying to give her a bit of ginger beforehand, but was just wondering if anyone has suggestions for what to do? She's thrown up a couple times at the end of long trips (like yesterday -but she had to go in the car as she was going to the vets for her stitches to come out). We roll the windows down a bit to equalize the air pressure for her and I try not to feed her right before or near to it but sometimes that's difficult.
Re: Carsick - any solutions? Can she see out? I noticed a vast improvement in Riley's in car behaviour once he could see. Now he's much older and in a crate he probably can't see very well any more but he's well and truly over the stress it caused him as a pup.
Re: Carsick - any solutions? My first thought was exactly the same as Barbara just mentioned. While Penny has never been carsick, she was definitley better when she was big enough to see out of the window - the whining and crying stopped straight away. You could try giving her a bit of rescue remedy before you go - a few drops on a treat is usually fine. Also maybe spray a blanket in there with some Adaptil.
Re: Carsick - any solutions? Yes, she usually sits on me and can see out the window. She seems happy when looking out and sniffing out the window. But she did get sick after lying down for awhile (her choice) yesterday… hmm. I like it when she sits down because the whining and crying stops, but if that makes her feel worse, that's not good. I will check out rescue remedy and see if that helps.
Re: Carsick - any solutions? When I was a kid, we had carsick straps on our car. They were straps that attached to the car frame and dragged along the ground. My friend tried it a couple of years ago for his dog. No more car sickness. No idea why it works. His mechanic laughed at the request.
Re: Carsick - any solutions? Sometimes travelling differently can make them sick too. You say she usually sits on your lap and is fine - because she has learned how to travel like the and got used to it. Also I think sitting on you minimises what they feel with regards to the motion of the car. You might find when she gets too big for this and has to go on the back seat or in the boot the car sickness may return because she has to get accustomed to a new way of travelling. I would be inclined to get her used to travelling in the back of the car now and see if this helps.
Re: Carsick - any solutions? She has thrown up while sitting on me and not sitting on me, and usually whines while sitting on me. I do agree I need to work on her being by herself in the car whether it's in a harness or crate or in the "boot". I don't actually have my own car right now (looking for a new one at the moment) so that's made it more difficult to work on this.
