It's been a while since I posted, but I have been keeping up with everyone else! We've had a stretch of well-below 0 F weather here in Minnesota, and with the wind, it's been between -25 and -40 F! Very unappealing for outside activities! Even the dogs just dash out to do their business, then head straight back to the door. This is a picture of Daisy and Henry looking longingly outside on a -35F day. For anyone worried about the cat they were looking at, he dashed back to the warm barn pretty quickly! Staring down the barn cat, who's staring in the window. by carpenternp, on Flickr 20150111_124327 by carpenternp, on Flickr This is a link to the two dogs wrestling on my bed. Too much energy and nowhere to put it! Poor Henry is getting the worst of it... And don't they look vicious?? https://www.dropbox.com/s/vh9f9xemkalobir/20150107_154730.mp4?dl=0 Daisy also learned how to roll over. The challenge now is to get her to not spontaneously roll over every time she sees a treat! ;D Here she is on the day we got outside for a short bit, which was also the day she ate something rotten (her recall is great! Her "leave it!" not so much... ), resulting in another severe GI infection. Temp of 105F, horrible cow-pie stools, totally lethargic = emergency visit to the vet. Waiting now on a fecal culture to find out just what the bug is, since the regular antibiotics don't seem to touch it. She's feeling better after 4 days of some kind of broad-spectrum antibiotic, but her stools are still not right. (I have to admit that the quiet dog she was when she felt bad was kind of nice reminder of how mellow the older dogs can be...not that I'd wish her sick at all!) 20150112_164612 by carpenternp, on Flickr Late afternoon, winter sun. by carpenternp, on Flickr We're going to start our 3rd series of puppy classes in a couple weeks. She's doing great with the obedience work, but stills needs socializing experiences. Living out of town is wonderful for most things, but we just don't get enough visitors! She's over the moon with excitement when people come to visit, though she does eventually settle down. At least she's stopped flinging her 55 pound body at people! Leaping dementedly in the air - still happening... I've read with interest the accounts of the bad puppy class posted by Maisie's mom (I think?). I can't imagine anyone deciding that a young puppy is aggressive! It can be a real challenge to find the right trainer. This 3rd series I'm taking with Daisy will be the 3rd trainer, too. I liked the first one, but she was 40 minutes away and the 2nd one knew less than I did! This 3rd one works with the vet who recommended against amputating Daisy's dislocated toe, so I already have some confidence in their setup. Gotta find the right people to handle these wonderful dogs!
Re: Catching up with Daisy Thanks for the update! I really hope Daisy is feeling much better soon. Poor girl!!! Those are lovely pics Will watch the vid when it's not 6am and I won't wake up the hubby and the dog I looked up what -25F and -40F are in Celcius - now that is seriously cold!!!!
Re: Catching up with Daisy This was lovely to read , and too right, finding the right people to help work with our dogs is so important . Those are great photos , shivering at the thought of the temperatures
Re: Catching up with Daisy What lovely pictures. (I'm shivering at -1.3 right now....brrrr) They make me think of mountain hares for some reason, blending into the snow Hope the new trainer works out. Really glad you posted x
Re: Catching up with Daisy Hello, Nancy! Good to see another fellow Minnesotan Glad to hear Daisy is doing well! And Henry, too! Hamilton has been quite restless as well but the past few days have been absolutely beautiful for this time of year! We have been taking extreme advantage of the nice weather. May I ask where you are from/nearby in Minnesota? Hehe it's funny about Daisy's roll over ;D Hammie does the same thing. I will tell him to sit. And he sits. I will tell him to lay down and he does so. Before I can tell him to roll over he will several times and look at me proud! How old are your furry friends? Hamilton is a little over 4 months.
Re: Catching up with Daisy Hi Libamajig! I'm so excited to hear about someone closer to me than many hundreds or thousands of miles distant! Daisy (9.5 months) and I live on a 10 acre farm with my hubby, another dog (Henry, 4 yrs), three cats, and two horses. Our farm is about an hour south of the Twin Cities, just south of New Prague. Where are you? Daisy seems to have recovered from her GI problem - for now! This morning she came into the kitchen, obviously finishing swallowing something. I said, "And what did you just eat, silly dog??" She just wiggled and wagged and looked so happy with herself.... Henry just looked at me patiently. So when do I have to stop calling her a puppy? At one year? Doesn't mental maturity count, too? By that measure,it could be years!
Re: Catching up with Daisy Kelly and I live on the edge of Melrose which is about 2 hours NW of the cities. As far as the weather goes, we were lucky with Hamilton. The extreme cold doesn't bother him a bit. We still don't let him outside long, but we didn't have to worry about him making a fuss when it was potty time. He absolutely loooves the snow. I wish it would just get one good snow fall! Do you have any snow there? Right now all of ours is almost completely melted. Hammie hasn't eaten too many weird things...yet! Well, Kelly found him with a mouse tail sticking out of his mouth, and he also ate rat poison (don't worry he's been taken care of for that). He does like to grab anything he can possibly grab nearby so I chase him down to get it out of his mouth. If I ignore him, he will come up to me as if saying, "look what I got, Mom! Aren't you gonna chase me?!" And ad soon as I make any movement towards him, he will take off like a black blur. If I ignore him long enough, he will go find something else that might make me chase him. They will always be our puppies ;D
