We had 2 - 3" of snow last night so Charlie and I drove to our walk along a country road, Charlie had his harness on with the double ended lead, beautiful walking, sitting on the verge when cars were approaching Started uncued look at me, once he got the hang of it he was great looking at me for C&T. Did some on lead STOP whistles too. On the way home we walked up a foot path to The Common, no Sheep brilliant, I dropped Charlie's lead and we had so much fun!! he ran around retrieving his large squeeky Kong ball, I ran away and he followed me, we even did some distance STOP whistles for a retrieve He had a lovely time running around and eating the snow ;D The Common is quite large and surrounded by woodland and probably about 20 or so times bigger than the paddock I used to use and enclosed so he couldn't get out, but he didn't do his perimeter running or go too far from me even though he had every opportunity, so I am going to mark this up as a success Only momentarily interested in the rabbit skin tug toy so I put it back in my bag, maybe tomorrow : He did a lovely 'wait' in the car boot until I released him Do you think he knew it was an enclosed area? :-\ Shattered though, I set off with Hattie at 0850 dropped her home, set off with Charlie and finished at 12:50, I will be fit as a fiddle by the time David gets home in 10 days!!! xx
Re: Charlie and I had an amazing time I can read you fizzing with happy excitement from your walk!!! DEFINITELY a success!!!
Re: Charlie and I had an amazing time
Do you think he knew it was an enclosed area? :-\
Who cares!!!!!!!! What a fabulous walk!!!! ;D Seriously though....I think it's more likely he doesn't know there's a boundary unless he bumps up against it and your hard work is paying off in terms of him keeping closer. Would that mean he won't leg it after something...no and that's why you keep training, why we all keep training but in terms of him looking far beyond you for fun and games You're making massive, massive progress. Enjoy it!
Re: Charlie and I had an amazing time You would never in a million years have thought you could have got to this point with Charlie, I remember your earlier posts! I think it is FANTASTIC ;D ;D ;D ;D
Re: Charlie and I had an amazing time I don't think we will ever stop him legging it after something unless his STOP whistle improves drastically, too much self rewarding in his previous homes, so much training to undo it but yes we keep going, as we all do and one day hopefully : I think you're right Barbara he didn't bump up against any boundary as he didn't go far enough, so he didn't know, makes me feel even more chuffed, thank you The lovely thing for me was to see his eyes on me keeping me in sight, running after me, but I must keep it in perspective there were no real distractions, people, dogs etc. but he did have a few long glances into the woods!! I think this would be a good place to train my place board when we get to that stage. I feel esctatic, but tomorrow I could come crashing and burning to earth!! : xx
Re: Charlie and I had an amazing time Great stuff, well done, all that hard work paying off big time.
Re: Charlie and I had an amazing time Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant. ;D You see Charlie is a 'real' dog. I've always known it. I bet you were having fun as well and I bet he knew which made you very interesting. Tomorrow just have fun again but if a pesky rabbit has left an irresistible scent that Charlie can't stop himself from following don't worry he can't go anywhere you keep having fun. You now know how good he can do it and that behaviour will get stronger and stronger. ;D
Re: Charlie and I had an amazing time Thank you, lets hope in time he can transfer these skills, that's the very difficult part for Charlie x
Re: Charlie and I had an amazing time Lovely to read Helen , for what its worth , I reckon it was your more relaxed attitude rather than the enclosed theory, but whatever it was, well done
Re: Charlie and I had an amazing time sounds wonderful!!! My Bella forgets EVERY bit of recall training when presented with FRESH SNOW have had to trail after her and retrieve HER a couple times in the last couple of days...naughty baby girl... : Better than tainting the recall cue tho..
Re: Charlie and I had an amazing time It's so nice to hear that you two had a wonderful time playing together. ;D Wish we would get some snow here. The dogs love it! ;D
Re: Charlie and I had an amazing time Day 2 was brilliant but Day 3 oh my word, I have just got back, I am soooo happy to share with you:- Armed with freshly cooked juicy chicken I did loads of C&T non cued look at me, we walked, ran, changed direction practically around the whole Common he looked at me every time, when I released him to "go play" he wondered away at about 10 meters he looked at me ran back every time C&T. We played ball although he is doing a little stay away so I threw another ball in the opposite direction which helped a little. We did two lovely stop whistles at about 10 meters one when he was looking into the distance and lovely recalls some when he had retrieved his ball which does seem to speed him up and to drop it. He saw something in the woods and ran to see but without calling him I just ran to the other side of the Common and he came after me at 60 mph When we had finished training we had a lovely play, Charlie was leaping up and bouncing around like a Gazelle his eyes wide and smiling, we both were actually ;D so glad it's secluded I may well have been carted away : He did sneak round the stile but waited for me when I told him to 'wait' even though he every chance to leg it On our walk back to the car there was an escaped Sheep in the middle of the road right by my car : we were about 50 meters away and Charlie was very interested, I told him to "leave it" he didn't make a sound, we stopped for a while and gradually edged forward until we were about 15 meters away, no problem at all, Sheep got back home through a gap in the hedge, Charlie was a good boy and just jumped into the car Should I continue to do this training on The Common whilst there are no Sheep? I was planning to walk him on lead to practise non cued look at me in some other areas :-\ Sorry went on a bit :-[ Thank you for listening xxx
Re: Charlie and I had an amazing time Yes, yes, definitely continue with the training on the common Helen!!!! It's clearly working, and it's so good to hear that you and Charlie are so focused on each other!!!! Wonderful stuff, brings a little tear to my eye when I think of all the trials and tribulations you have been through. PLEASE don't feel you are telling us too much, it's so good to read these posts, a tribute to your determination! Good boy Charlie!!!
Re: Charlie and I had an amazing time I'm so happy for you Helen. What a brilliant day. ;D ;D ;D I agree with Karen while you have the opportunity keep going to the common. However if you think he is starting to loose his focus on you and getting a bit too used to it the next day do something else then go back the day after or even finish early on the common and do some lead walking just so you keep him guessing about what might happen. Obviously you having fun and enjoying training has a very positive effect on Charlie so I hope you both keep having loads of fun. ;D. Don't worry about being carted away they haven't come for me yet.
Re: Charlie and I had an amazing time If you don't post it then how will I get a big grin on my face like this one ;D ;D ;D really and truly wonderful!!! xxx
Re: Charlie and I had an amazing time Well done, Helen, and if it is working then keep on doing it. ;D
