Re: Charlie's July/August training The whole chasing thing is sooo exciting though. And Joggers! Not only chase worthy but the jump and lick reward after the catch is awesome. Even better if they squeel! Lol I can just see Milly doing that. She would be like hold him down Charlie.
Re: Charlie's July/August training
She would be like hold him down Charlie.
;D ;D ;D These joggers, they ask for it really - minding their own business, running along.... Well, have to sort it anyway. I think it's the first problem I've had with a jogger though, but will do some proofing and see how we go. We did a lovely sit-wait in a field covered in ravens (with attitude) though.... so that's good. Birds - meh. Joggers - let me at 'em. :
Re: Charlie's July/August training Haha The birds would have been worse for Milly. She is pretty much at the chase everything that moves stage I think. But she isn't allowed to even run let alone chase anything. So we are best staying in the house to keep the temptation at bay. It will be full steam ahead with the training to leave things be after she has all healed. You are doing an amazing job with Charlie. You should be very proud of yourself and him. How is his leg?
Re: Charlie's July/August training
How is his leg?
Thanks for asking - that's kind. No problems at all today with his right. He was mis-stepping on his left after standing perfectly fine on his right to have a pee. Objectively, having watched very closely, what he is doing is avoiding touching the area that he has peed on with the leg that is lifted resulting in a missing step and a hop with the leg on the floor. He has always avoided touching pee and poo and horror and much fuss results if he every stands in poo. Unless it's fox poo. In which case he is happy to be covered in it from head to toe. Still going to pop him to the vet's tonight though. It's a reasonable thing to do to have a check up before I take him on a training course next week. Will give me peace of mind.
Re: Charlie's July/August training I have a friend who had an English Springer (as opposed to a Welsh Springer) and it used to chase joggers and then nip them on the bottom.
Re: Charlie's July/August training Julie that's great to hear. I would be the same checking in with the vet. It pays to to be careful. Milly isn't fond of stepping in it either. She did a funny hop skip thing over another dogs poop at training on Thursday night. It was quite comical. Rachael that's funny and bad at the same time. Imagine the embarrassment for dog owner and jogger both lol.
Re: Charlie's July/August training Glad his leg is OK, he must've built up some muscle there now! Sounds like he is really doing well too...we are working hard at proofing with distractions now, good walk at Olbury Court Estate, for us very busy, with joggers, cyclists and families. Not as busy as Wimbledon I imagine, but challenging for us. Worked on keeping Benson close, by calling his name and rewarding his attention..with C&T a few feet away from me. Very high value treats needed for the recall though! Good walk overall, with one altercation with a small, yapping dog, scooped up into the owners arms...well that was like a red flag to a bull! ;D No recall whatsoever and a furious owner to boot...ho hum. I did apologise profusely. It is interesting with small dogs, and I am starting to wonder if his jumping up was linked to his experiences with them, recently a couple of small dogs attacked him, same place actually on Sunday..they actually bit another dog there before one of the dog owners dragged them both off and plonked them at their owners feet.. Benson generally avoids them anyway something to do with being chased by a pack of chihuahuas I think a few months back! Why do small dogs go for young labs I wonder?? Finished off with a lovely swim, and it was great to see his confidence improving in the water,it was so clear you could see his legs working in the water. He also met a couple of lovely labs for a play and paddle!

Re: Charlie's July/August training It's great to hear about Benson's progress Kate - sounding very good. It's great he is swimming well. Wimbledon is super busy at certain times. But I'm managing where and when I walk to keep the distractions to a sensible level. We are not working with a lot right now. I used to be able to stroll with puppy Charlie through the middle of the chaos - ah, those were the days. Maybe it wasn't so good and I'm just looking back on it too fondly! ;D ;D ;D
It is interesting with small dogs...Why do small dogs go for young labs I wonder??
Yes, similar to the question on Lauren's thread. I do think there is something about bouncing young labradors that can threaten smaller dogs. Even when I think "ah, there's Charlie playfully bowing and being very polite" the small dog might be thinking "get out of my face you great lump and stop looming over me".
Yes I am sure there is something in that, maybe a bad experience has developed into some sort of defensive /aggressive behaviour in some smaller dogs. Benson actually doesn't bounce over to smaller dogs, he is very cautious and polite in his approach, and only bounces with permission from the other dog if that makes sense. I think in this case picking the dog up changed the parameters so to speak, plus an aggressive owner didn't help matters much.

Re: Charlie's July/August training No, all fine! We can pack our buckets and spades clicker and treat bag for our hols next week!
Re: Charlie's July/August training Glad you got the ok for your hols - sorry, I mean course, Julie! Regarding small dogs - Poppy has huge respect, especially for small white fluffy ones. She seems them coming and lies down to make herself as small as possible, and refuses to look them in the eyes. Then once they have sniffed her, she runs away as fast as she can, and scuttlebutts around me in relief at having escaped intact… I can only think she must have had a nasty experience on a walk once with a small white dog, but it wasnt with me, and the other family members deny any knowledge of any such thing either! :
Re: Charlie's July/August training Yes, Charlie stays away from most terriers, especially white ones. Not all, he's met some lovely ones. But generally, he won't approach a terrier. I know why, he's met loads that barked and snapped. I speak to lots of owners (there are so many where I live) and lots of lab owners say the same about terriers. Which does make me wonder what terrier owners say about labradors!
Re: Charlie's July/August training Well, years ago there was a small JRT that belonged to the people who owned the mini-golf course at our local park. This little dog, Bobby, was the original Terrorist that gave JRT's a bad name. He kept snarling at and biting my dogs - they didnt like it of course, but put up with it because he was much smaller and younger than them. One day, when the normal nipping/growling/generally being a pest was going on, Bones suddenly lost his temper and grabbed Bobby's whole head in his mouth. I was terrified and thought this was going to be the end, but he didnt hurt him, just held his head firmly in his teeth, growling ferociously. Then he shook him once, and dropped him. Ever after that, Bobby used to creep and fawn around Bones in a sickeningly sycophantic way. Bones walked tall and felt hugely pleased with himself. ;D
Re: Charlie's July/August training Wow... Charlie just legs it. That's his default reaction to anything though, which the trainer tells me I should be glad about. Your Bones sounds like he was quite a boy.
Re: Charlie's July/August training My friend used to have a couple of Yorkies who would launch themselves onto my German Pointer's necks and hang on, the German Pointers used to carry on walking as if nothing was happening
