So sorry Charlie hasn't responded well today :'( I agree with everyone that you should tell Annette how you feel and take it from there.

If you remember, I had problems recalling Harley from children a month or so back.....well, we have made progress by using a ball - I have done the same as you and got Harley to focus on playing ball with me to which she ignores everyone and everything around. Personally I am really happy about this as she is less likely to run after children, and instead come back to me.

I really hope you manage to sort things out. Sending you big hugs xx

I wonder whether you took Charlie out with the fear that he wouldn't respond to the whistle and he has picked up on your fears?

I would be honest with Annette but also remember how good your first lesson was and how Charlie moved on as a result.

Take heart, all is not lost.

Just want to send some sympathy. Although I'm new here I've been a 'lurker' for some months & have followed your saga with Charlie. I think you have shown amazing determination and perseverance and I understand how angry you must feel with your trainer. I would want to talk with her to find out what her new plan is, before deciding whether to continue training with her.
Regardless of what you decide, I feel sure that you can regain the loss ground - if Charlie has been at a certain level of recall once , then I'm convinced you can achieve it again. Do hope things start to improve for you.

I agree with the suggestions to be honest with Annette. But don't use an approach that will burn the bridge. See what her plan is.

I also agree that the mistake was letting him off near birds, not blowing the whistle repeatedly. I bet he didn't even hear the whistle, he was so intent on the birds.

If you are unhappy with the next session don't go back. But give one more session a try. No trainer is perfect. But a good trainer will think, reflect, plan and adjust and it sounds like that is what Annette may be doing.

    All is not lost :)

Helen, you have dealt with so much with Charlie, I am certain you will overcome this setback. As others have said, it's so often two steps forward and one step back, with dog training... Also, it's good to remember trainers are only human too. I am sure Annette has spent quite some time thinking "why did I tell them to let him go?? What was I thinking..."

Just catching up with this, Helen. So sorry you've had this set back. You've had some good advice so far so nothing much more for me to add, just wanted so send some hugs and sympathy your way. Try not to lose heart, Charlie has come a long way, please don't get too disheartened. Hopefully this will be just a little blip that in the end will give you deeper understanding into the best way to deal with Charlie.

Joy that's very kind of you to say - thank you very much :)

After Saturday's not so good lesson we took a few steps back with Charlie's training and I am happy to say all seems to be going well, recall and ball playing fully reinstated. I think we will continue this way until our next lesson as don't want any panics

Thank you all for your unwavering support as always :) xx
