When I was a little girl, we used to go to bed on Christmas Eve and then wake up on Christmas Day to magic, my Mother would do the tree and decorations on Christmas Eve after we went to bed. I try and do the tree as late as possible in December, depends on OH.
Twenty years ago we had our first lab doerak. She was 10 month old at Christmas time. The children were little, the oldest 10 and the youngest 2,5. So of course we had to put up a real Christmas tree. We had our lab in a crate, but.... and crate and Christmas tree was too much in our room. We decided to uncrate our lovely lab and gave her a nice place to sleep in our living room. One night I heard a tremendous noice. I went down to the living room and was met in the hall with our little rascal....she was covered in Christmas decorations all over and had a Christmas ball in her mouth! The Christmas tree had fallen..I then collected all the balls and stuff and missed one. As our children were little we had unbreakable balls. And...one was missing... As my OH was in Austria on a liver meeting, I called my sister wh what to do and I called the vet on call and he ordered to come and have x-rays. So my sister came to watch our children and my brother in law drove me to the vet.... All was well in the end, not knowing if she ate a Christmas ball. All I know is that the vet could buy a large Christmas turkey for he earned a lot of money....
That's a great tale to tell all these years later @Anne123 , but I bet at the time it was pretty fraught!
Yes it was a fraught!! Otherwise I wouldn’t have gone to the vet in the middle of the night 2 days before Christmas!....
OK, I think we've decided just to go with the little artificial Christmas tree this year, that can stand on a table. I will be sad though... and may weaken...
Far to early for me......another 2 weeks maybe! We have been lucky so far that Harley has ignored the tree unless a bauble has fallen off, then it's hers! (Touch wood)
My favourite decoration (you can see my hedgehog hiding behind hoping he doesn't get eaten this year).
We're just going to have to make do with the tiny tree this year... My nerves cannot stand the idea of Merlin 'playing' with the Christmas tree... "MUM! HELP!!! I got caught in the lights! I DIDNT MEAN TO PULL THE TREE DOWN!!!"
Yes, it was exactly the same with us and to this day I don't put the tree up until Christmas Eve. Don't know how little Joy will be about it but we never had any problems with our other dogs, apart from tails of course! Mind you, I've never left a puppy or young dog unsupervised around a tree. There was one Christmas morning when we found that Barley, our Lab at the time had been at the presents but had only opened the ones with her name on them. 'She can read! She can read!' I cried. Husband then pointed out that her presents were the only ones that were edible, which may have had something to do with it. ( I still believe she could read though.)
