I am following advice given on the poop eating article, of using a magic word to distract Otis away from poo. We have just been out to our local park, for a practice session. Sure enough he found a nice fresh pile, I threw, a nice bit of roast chicken down and used the word 'tasty !' it worked, he gulped it down as I bagged someone else poo. It's going to take some refinement on my part, I must not use the magic word for general recall, also, do you think I can use it to recall away from other yuck stuff he is inclined to eat ? Okay he dosen't role in anything, but I sometimes think Otis is pretty disgusting, he decided he liked the greasy smelly water in the kitchen drain, that was backing up as, a tasty beverage, rather than his own fresh stuff, hope it dosen't upset his tum. Also crafty devil, he managed to sniff some poo, snaffle the chicken, and then go back and snaffle the poo, so it looks like I will be cleaning the park up of poo as we go about this training. Is that okay do you think, or should I just let him snaffle the poo ? He really dosen't eat his own due to raw feeding, but will if he has been getting a lot of junky treats, which adds weight to Pippas theory on dogs like kibble poo. I've noticed he will leave another dogs poo who is raw fed alone too. Thanks, Maggie
Re: Clever boy. Sorry, can't help with this as the only poo Harley will eat if cow poo : Well done for getting to leave it though
Re: Clever boy. Sounds like you are making some progress Maggie. Sounds a good plan. Lilly used to like all sorts of poo as a youngster, but has grown out of it as we get older. We walked through a field full of cow, sheep and rabbit poop the other day and she ignored it all! I am quite sure she wouldn't go past the fox poo though : Hopefully Otis will refine his tastes too.....I know Pippa's article wasn't overly promising, but that was more for their own poo wasn't it? I think you are going the right way about it.
Re: Clever boy. Good luck Maggie,I think the idea of the magic word is to use it absolutely only in an emergency so don't get into the behavior of using it over and over as it will lose it's 'magic' ;D Dexter was a little imp for cat poo when he was younger ....I think he'd still give it a go if left to his own devices but I keep him well occupied if I think we are in a cat poo area ??? And as long as he hasn't begun his 'snack' I can tell him to leave now....I've been lucky,he's never bothered, with other dogs deposits!
