This is all very helpful. I have clipped Charlie's nails twice and I really find it quite nerve wracking and I worry that I will cut the quick so always take too little off. Charlie's are longer than Choc Charlie's and Obi's. Does it hurt them if you cut the quick?

I need to take some more off Charlie's  xx

I don't think that me snipping the quick was a terrible event for Charlie although of course I felt dreadful about it.

He pulled his paw back, and looked at me (as if saying "that so deserves another seabiscuit"). But he was happy to stay while I did the rest, and he licked at the bleeding nail a couple of times but left it alone after I washed it with hibiscrub. It didn't bleed for all that long. No more than 3 minutes, and it wasn't a lot of blood. A bit like a papercut on the end of your finger that produces a disproportionate amount of blood but still not a lot in the great scheme of things...

Riley's are clicking and definitely need doing. You've inspired me! Obi's are easier, you can see the quick in his pale claws. Rileys black claws are a nightmare! I was told a day or two between cuts if you want a little off at a time. Everyone should have a nice pedi.....cheers me up no end :)

Somebody please send seabiscuits to the US. Myles is pretty resistent to nail clipping, now I'm trying a dremel. He just tries to get away from me, pulls paw back, very squirmy. I suppose, like everything with this boy, will have to in train baby steps. Will be glad when temps cool down and can walk him more so won't have to trim. I just hate doing it!

Charlie was easy - he is used to clicker training fuelled by seabiscuits. I got through a lot of seabiscuits though. It didn't take him long to twig that seabiscuits were delivered for keeping his paw on my knee. Pulling paw away or getting up, seabiscuits stopped....

His claws are still clicking on floors a bit. They used to be much shorter than they are now.

You've inspired me to check Simba's nails....yup, they need a trim too. I do a couple at a time, he seems to tolerate that well enough, especially if he gets treats. I'll keep working away at it until they are all done.

OUCH! Yes, it hurts when you cut the quick. I did Scooby's front paws today (quite long - and the first time I have ever clipped a dog's nails) - only a tiny amount off each, with plenty of fish skins - all was well & I was quite pleased with myself. Then later on, I came to his back paws..should have noticed they were a fair bit shorter than the front, but I went in merrily - cut the first one OK then on to the second - SQUEAL-YELP - blood. I stopped at this point. We went outside with more fish skins & kitchen towel & we recovered very quickly. But now I feel bad about approaching him again. I've just stroked his front feet with the clippers - he was a bit jumpy. I'll keep on with this approach, then trim again

This is how I have to go about nail clipping as I'm such a wimp,he will get a bath and his pantaloons trimmed too!
This is the first time we are using this new service from our Vets.He wasn't that happy when the guys arrived but he bounded out to the van...then looked a bit reluctant when he realised I wasn't coming too!My friend has just gone out and had a peep at him and she said he is standing perfectly still while they shower him over .....poor lad!Least he will get his nails clipped!

Ah, yes, just like us, dogs' rear nails grow at a much slower rate than their front ones, so don't need trimming as regularly, or at least you only take a tiny amount off comparatively.

My vet showed me how to place my finger flat on Snowie's paw pad. The nail should line up with my finger. Anything longer gets clipped off. Previously I'd thought they were too long and kept trimming. Thankfully have never cut into the quick! I've read that applying corn flour helps to stop the bleeding if you do cut into the quick.

......seriously Barbara......Murder In The Bakery ........

My poor lad.....just taken him to the pet shop that has a groomers at the back and had his nails clipped....good as gold,I checked him all over ,I've come home made a sandwich ,he's walked about a bit on a white tiled floor,nothing......then I sit down to eat my lunch and read the paper and notice he's licking something and his paw is gushing blood...
It really looks like it's coming out of his claw but that's a bit weird isn't it when it's been ok for over half an hour? I've washed and dried it,applied flour and just put some protection over it and it hasn't bled through......
I need to MAN UP and start doing this clipping lark myself .....I can't have a satisfactory result from anyone here!

    Oh poor man!!!!

They do bleed an awful lot.... That's paws (and fingers) for you. Fortunately the upside of the massive blood supply is fast healing.

I'm sure he got lots of cuddles from you.

It must have started bleeding again...perhaps he had a little nibble?

Poor boy. It does stop quickly though.

Our dogs are SO lucky....a nicked nail, and they have a human rush to care for it. Let alone it was an accident that happened in the beauty salon in the first place!

I've just been looking at Charlie's claws. Some of them still seem a bit long (or, still longer than they once were). I was wondering about buying an electric pet file thing. The reviews online are really mixed. Some people say they are great, others that the dog hated it/device was poor quality.

I have a dremel already.....but wondering if there was something better.

Ha ha ha! Exactly ! and yes ,if Chris was dripping blood I'd probably point vaguely in the direction of an ancient packet of plasters and leave him to it! In this particular instance I was very efficient as I was just about to start baking so already had the flour down on the counter
