We saw a wild boar on our walk this morning!!!!

There are plenty of them living in the forest right near where we are, but they are very shy of humans and so you hardly ever see them. Poppy is frightened of them, so usually gives them a wide berth, but this one was not too far away from us, rootling in the snow for acorns or something... She barked and ran at it, but came right back when I called (she's not stupid!). The boar gave us a hard stare, then turned on its heel and dashed off into the forest. Such an amazing, magnificent - though slightly scary - sight!

The funny thing was that for the rest of the walk Poppy kept rushing around with her head and tail up, huffing and puffing in a most brave and important fashion, in a 'let me at him' kind of way... Not all heroes wear capes, you know  - Poppy my not-so-brave little dog, bless her heart

Oh, how wonderful but scary! I'm quite glad I've not bumped into one yet! I'm sure it's only a matter of time, you see their marks everywhere in Andorra.

Yikes, good thing it didn't chase Poppy back to you. Those are scary critters.

I found moose tracks this morning. There was a cow and calf here a few years ago but I thought they had moved on. Just single tracks on the snowmobile trail this morning but I do not want to meet a moose. I remember the horribly sad thread here just recently of the puppy who died in Alberta after being stomped by one.

Errrr, no - she wouldn't have protected me. If that pig had come back she'd have been hiding behind my legs and I'd have been protecting HER. She was just pretending to be brave... After the pig had gone...

When we first had our second home in the woods, Euan ran off....He didn't listen while we were calling him. He was always very obedient! He was off lead...after 5 minutes he came back, chased by a boar.....We certainly got a fright.....Luckily the boar turned and left Euan alone. We have never seen Euan run that fast! And that with his bad back. He ran for his life.
Wild boars are a nuisance here. They enter into gardens and plough the gardens in search of food.

Oh my gosh! That is so scary.

Most dangerous thing we have encountered is a field of over-friendly cows.
I don't envy the wild animal contacts.

I find cows quite terrifying since having the dogs! I get really nervous walking them through a herd if we need to - sometimes they're out on the mountains and you just come across a bunch on a path you're on. I've heard so many horror stories!

Me too - give me the wild boar any day. My holiday on Exmoor last year was almost ruined because there are cows everywhere on the moor roaming free. I am completely freaked by them, when I have a dog with me.

I'm glad I'm not the only one! It sounds so silly to say you're scared of cows! :D
I'm not one bit when it's just me, but with the dogs, eeeek!

One of our friends has a Guard Llama to protect his few sheep and goats from Coyotes. His Lab and the Llama are not at all fond of each other. I think the Llama thinks that the Lab is just a big Coyote.

Are these the huge European boars from Russia and Eastern Europe? We had those in Eastern Tennessee, and they were considered a very dangerous game animal.

Yes indeed! But actually they are only dangerous when cornered, injured, or when protecting their young. We have loads of them living right close by us, but they are so shy of humans you hardly ever see them.
